Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Krisan Murphy
Curtis James Jackson III, known in the music world as 50 Cent, is not a good role model for young people and this biography magnifies it. Orphaned at eight years old when his drug-dealing mother was murdered, Curtis grew up in a violent environment. He turned to selling drugs at age eleven, seeking the wealth produced. Drugs and violence ultimately led to Curtis’s arrest and confinement in a six-month, military-style boot camp. It was not until the birth of his son, Marquise, that Curtis was able to find a different way to support himself. Curtis immersed himself in his favorite type of music: gansta rap. Jam Master Jay and Eminem helped 50 Cent succeed in the world of rap where he found his new life. It took over a decade before the popular musician was able to put drugs and violence behind him and begin helping others. Controversy still hovers over him. This book is written in short, choppy, and poorly constructed sentences and lacks professional style. Although this author has written and published many books, the grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation in this book is mediocre. Part of the “Superstars of Hip Hop” series. Reviewer: Krisan Murphy; Ages 12 up.
