White's thorough coverage of 50 selected trails encompasses all types of terrain in all six regions of Nevada, a state otherwise noted for its glitzy casinos and swaths of sagebrush. Beginning with an overview of the flora, fauna, geology, climate, and history of the Silver State, White (author of outdoor guides on California and Nevada) follows with advice on seasonal hiking and hazards regarding high altitude, wildlife, and dehydration. Divided by region, the hikes include concise driving directions to the trail head, the distance of the hike, the level of difficulty, and maps. A few of the hikes are close to the state's major urban centers, Reno (e.g., one to the summit of Mt. Rose) and Las Vegas (e.g., one in the Valley of Fire State Park). More remote hike locations are found in central and eastern Nevada, like one to the top of Wheeler Peak, a strenuous eight-mile-plus hike round trip. White includes extensive information in an appendix with contact agencies, Nevada wilderness areas, and Nevada trail organizations.
