Overview

50 Literacy Strategies for Beginning Teachers, 1-8 identifies 50 research-based techniques that develop literacy competency before, during, and after reading. Each literacy strategy is accompanied by a qualifying matrix, called Strategy at a Glance, that identifies what phase of the lesson the strategy best fits and in which classroom setting the strategy will most easily work (with individual students, in a small- or whole-group setting, or for center work). The matrix also points out which skill area a strategy addresses-word recognition, vocabulary development, comprehension, or writing.

Every strategy in this text is predictably formatted for ease of use. Each one begins with the strategy's purpose and includes the title of an authentic piece of literature on which the strategy can be centered. Each strategy then directs teachers in step-by-step procedures that will scaffold literacy learning. Eleven new strategies have been added to this new edition, giving even the newest teachers 50 ways to feel confident in their first classroom experiences.
