Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
In 1950, Leo Fender began production of the first solid-body electric guitar, and music hasn't been the same since. Celebrating the anniversary of the event, this book provides a year-by-year chronicle of the evolution of Fender and its world-famous models. Bacon highlights the process of reevaluation and reinvention, noting Fender's focus throughout each decade: visionary design work in the 1950s, technical flexibility in the 1960s, core models in the 1970s, diversification in the 1980s, and the retro craze in the 1990s. Filled with photos of album covers, ads, catalogs, memorabilia, and famous Fender-wielding musicians, this is not the definitive history of Fender (for that, see Richard R. Smith's Fender: The Sound Heard 'Round the World, Omnibus, 1996), but it does present facts in a previously unavailable format and is relatively inexpensive.
