    Lots of Variety

Filled with beautiful color photographs, this cookbook has everything from traditional sheet cake to an unusual lavender cake. Chapters include foolproof cakes, classic cakes, coffee and cake, tortes and gateaux, creamy cheesecakes, special occasion cakes, and cakes for special diets such as gluten-free.

As with the other cookbooks in this series, there are over 100 base recipes with each having 4-5 variations to total 500. The ingredients are mostly those that can be found at a local grocery store with a few exceptions such as lavender flowers and other edible flowers needed for a couple of the recipes. The other minor issue is that most of the recipes call for self-rising flour, something I don't stock in my pantry but one can easily make a homemade version by mixing 1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder and 1/2 teaspoon salt to one cup of regular all-purpose flour.

I've made just one recipe so far, the mocha chocolate cake that has a hint of coffee flavor, and it turned out pretty well so my review is based on that. I don't know if the other recipes are as good but the photos do make them look appetizing. Others I'm looking forward to trying include lemon drizzle cake, apricot and hazelnut loaf cake, raspberry and white chocolate torte, and ginger and lime ice cream cake.

Anyone who enjoys baking desserts will find plenty of inspiration in this little cookbook.
