Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"[The] organic, sustainable bento recipes are terrific, but what’s really stunning are the vibrant illustrations."  —Gourmet

Publishers Weekly
Long on ideas but short on recipes, this guide to eye-catching bento box lunches delivers its promised 501 variants on the iconic Japanese single-portion takeout meal, even if the final product may be out of reach for its readers. Roughly organized by theme-art, cute, colorful, traditional, stylish, holidays-contributors provide plenty of ideas for vibrant, healthy lunches. After a brief overview of basics from Dye-quick assembly, packing for maximum efficiency-the volume sets some high standards with showpieces featuring edible geese made out of mushrooms and a whimsical green eggs-and-ham meal, before moving to more traditional fare incorporating sushi, teriyaki chicken and yakitori. Menus stretch beyond the Pacific rim, with easy-to-assemble staples like beef stew and, for younger diners, sandwiches in the shape of scowls or grins. Some empty-the-fridge scavenger hunts (wraps, taco kits) can feel like little more than repackaged leftovers, and some impractical suggestions (french fries, eggs or pancakes, arcane ingredients) prove misleading. Still, these are the exceptions to the rule, which includes practical instructions, emphasizes assembly rather than preparation, and employs a wide range of kitchen tools. Those well-versed in Japanese cuisine and who own lots of culinary doodads will benefit most; novice cooks looking for simple, whimsical school lunches will likely be overwhelmed.

    The Wonderful World of Bento

BUY THIS BOOK!!!!!! I first encountered Bento Lunches in the New York Times and felt inspired enough to attempt to make my very own colorful nutritious lunch. I used the search engine online just to get a general idea of the books available and immediately my eyes fell to 501 Bento Lunches, mainly because of the described 501 lunches and catchy and colorful cover. Upon finally finding the book at a local Barnes & Noble, I was pleasantly surprised to find a hand held miniature book (instead of a bulky cookbook) that complemented the size of their lunches. Upon first opening the book I LOVED LOVED LOVED the PICTURES of various types of lunches.

I usually tend to pass over the cooking or food preparation books with tuns of words and no picture of the final product. This book is the Cu De Gra of "Unique and Brilliant Recipes" as described on the cover. The recipes are explained in a simple fashion that breaks down what is needed and preparation techniques accompanied by the picture of each and every finished product yes all of them have pictures on every page.

In addition I added a few different vegetables to the recipe and spices to make it more personal and they blended very nicely to the already described recipe. This is the go to guide for beginners that require the basics to the intermediate and advanced cooks who want a challenge to make Art Bento, Cute Bento, Colorful Bento, Traditional Bento and for mom's who want to get their kids to eat a colorful and nutritious lunch at school there are a tun of kid friendly bentos that can be stored either in the refrigerator or at room temperature.

Trust me with these recipes your child will gobble up blue berries, zucchini, tomatoes and you will be right there eating Aquarium Bento, Zoo Bento, and Heart Bento too! Not only are there wonderful illustrations on each and every page from cover to cover but the "Getting Started Techniques" and challenges of making lobster bento with long grain rice, cherry tomatoes, fresh cilantro, whole cloves, yellow mustard, and cayenne pepper, seeded and cut into long strips in a 1 tier bento box will have you taking a second look at fresh areas of your grocery store and finding the little diamonds that will provide you with a wonderful lunch that inadvertently provides the proper portions (that look small but pack a BIG PUNCH)while assisting with weight loss and good conversation piece with colleagues along the away.

I am like most who get inspired try a meal or two of a new cookbook then it collects dust. Well I bought this book late August and have not put it down yet! And my family is still begging for more colorful tasty treats! GO BENTO!!!!!!
