In his first book, 51 Days No Excuses, Rich Gaspari reviews his journey of getting back into competition shape in just 51 days! Rich Gaspari, former professional bodybuilder, winner of the 1989 Arnold Classic, and three time runner - up Mr. Olympia. He also received the Arnold Classic Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013 and is the CEO of Gaspari Nutrition. Needless to say, the man knows bodybuilding and fitness!
From the beginning of the book, Rich lets you know this is not an easy, gimmicky way to get in shape. He is very open about these workouts being difficult but realistic. He also makes the promise that if you follow the philosophies as discussed in the book, you WILL get results. The book takes you through his 51 days of transformation, with an autobiographical story attached to each day. These stories may be about his upbringing, his father, his philosophies, the fall and resurrection of his business, Gaspari Nutrition, or his early days as a bodybuilder. All are interesting and insightful stories.
As promised, the workouts are difficult, and require a high degree of focus and intensity to complete. They are designed to get you in the best shape of your life! The average workout is around 32-38 sets, so they can be completed in about an hour or so. (No time will be needed to chit chat with other people at the gym while you are working out, as discussed in the book). There is a Muscle Builder plan and a Hardgainer Workout for each day of the plan. The plan also emphasizes the importance of rest.
In the book, Rich emphasizes the importance of timing and frequency of the meals, but is not a one-size-fits-all plan where everyone gets the same quantities. There is no diet that will work the same for everyone, and he is pretty open about the need for you to find that balance which works for you. Nowhere does it say, everyone should eat X amount of calories to get the body of your dreams. He does state the preferred macronutrients for his plan (the percentages of protein, carbs and fats). I think you will be surprised, I know I was! It should be pointed out, this is NOT a get skinny diet plan. Lean and muscular, yes, but not skinny!
Rich Gaspari has accomplished much in his life, and he has the great stories to tell from it! To hear him talk about the early days of his career, with Joe Weider, Lee Haney (his workout partner for years), and his time at Gold’s Gym in Venice Beach, California was fascinating. The respect and admiration for his father is well documented throughout the book as well! My favorite story was the improbable story that brought about the title to this book, 51 Days: No Excuses. What a random number of days, I thought, as I read the title! Well, 51 days was his accidental deadline. Sometimes in life we get deadlines, but I cannot imagine getting the deadline Rich was dealt! He was successful in getting himself where he wanted to be, and with his plan, I think most can do the same.
I highly recommend this book to anyone that is serious about getting in shape. As the title states, 51 Days: No Excuses. It is not going to be easy, but I do find it attainable! This book has enough great stories, a detailed workout plan, a nutrition plan, and valuable advice from champion bodybuilder and CEO, Rich Gaspari! Get your copy today, you will be glad you did!
