51 Portuguese Idioms presents 51 Brazilian Portuguese Street Smart words & expressions in the context of 102 everyday situations.

* Follow seven Brazilian characters as they go about their daily lives;
* Learn colloquial expressions in the context of real-life situations;
* Get to know more about Brazil through our Cultural Notes;
* Improve your grammar with pointers to our blog posts and video lessons;
* Build current vocabulary for personal and professional relationships.

Each word and expression is presented in two different situations that mirror daily interactions in modern day Brazil.

The 102 situations are presented in English, so you can focus your attention completely on the Street Smart vocabulary that you are learning. The sentences that contain the 51 colloquial words and expressions are presented in Portuguese followed by their English translation. Through these Portuguese/English examples you will build vocabulary beyond the colloquial expressions that are the primary goal of this book.

Our goal is to help you cross the bridge between textbooks and real life: 51 Portuguese Idioms brings you the Portuguese that you won't learn in traditional books or classes. With this book you will learn idiomatic expressions, modern day slang, and popular sayings that are pervasive in everyday real-life communication.

Editorial Reviews

Adam Lee
While editing 51 Portuguese Idioms, I came across roughly 15 phrases that I hadn't seen before. It's not as if I just started learning Portuguese last year or anything, because in reality, I've been doing it for close to a decade. Learning and understanding everyday phrases in Portuguese allows the student to take their head out of the traditional textbooks and gain insight into Brazilian culture.
It is my hope that you will enjoy and learn from this book as much as I did.

    A must for any non-native speaker!

    I've been studying Portuguese for about a year- enough time to know the basics and some intermediate concepts, but not really enough to FULLY understand how everything works. One of my biggest worries is having the opportunity to speak with a native and sounding like a textbook. I grew up in a place (New England) that isn't exactly a hotbed of Brazilian culture, so I had no clue about much of the slang and "inside jokes" that are so common in the language. Not only does this book help in expanding the reader's awareness of "street smart" phrases, but it also showcases and explains how these phrases came to be in the context of Brazilian society. It provides information in short, memorable situations that keep the reader involved, but not overwhelmed... Because each phrase is a lesson in itself, you can easily put the book down after only a few pages. The end result is a useful and fun read that learners of all levels will get a kick out of!

    Highly recommended- you must check it out!

    This book is an excellent read for anyone with a desire to learn more about Brazilian culture and expressions. I am learning to speak Brazilian Portuguese and has been extremely helpful. Cultural notes are given throughout the book and the information is presented cleary and gives situations where these 51 expressions would commonly be used. Now I can't get enough Brigadeiro!(Brazilian chocolate dessert) Bom trabalho, Luciana e Renata. Gostei muito!

    Great book! É otimo!

    This book has 51 idioms that are very useful for any situation. They will definitely make you sound cooler and in touch with Brazilian culture.

    You are given two scenarios in which you can use the idiom and there is a dialogue-like structure to each. Also, there are helpful cultural notes/tips that make understanding Brazilian culture possible.

    I recommend this book to anyone.
