Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"Arne and Carlos love Christmas and decorating their Norwegian home. The Christmas balls they designed are in the Scandinavian tradition. These are perfect to knit for gifts as they are fast and require small amounts of yarn. . . . A quirky and enjoyable book that works as a coffee table book." —www.examiner.com

"I'd never heard of them before, but I'm kind of in love with Arne & Carlos. . . . This book is worth a look just to see their amazing inspiration books, which clearly illustrate where the ideas for different motifs came from. [These range] from religious-themed ornaments to hearts, reindeer, Christmas trees, skiers, sledders, even a witch." —www.knitting.about.com

"Knitting holiday ornaments is a lot like eating potato chips: Betcha can't stop at just one! Arne & Carlos, well-known Scandinavian designers, have incorporated berries, snowflakes, animals, traditional motifs, and original patterns into Christmas ornaments that are sure to become cherished heirlooms." —Knit 'n Style (September 2011)

"The charted patterns for the motifs could easily be adapted to other projects such as mittens. Recommended for advanced beginners comfortable with Fair Isle up to expert knitters, especially those curious about holiday traditions in other countries." —www.LibraryJournal.com (September 15, 2011)

"Arne & Carlos have drawn on traditional Scandinavian influences to come up with Christmas balls incorporating classic holiday graphics such as snowflakes, berries, and angels as well as more ornate patterns found in Nordic knitwear. A delightful book to look through." —Debbie Bliss Knitting Magazine

"Speaking of gifts, you'll want to knit a few hundred of these ornaments for the holidays designed by Arne & Carlos. Use them to mark place settings, delight hostesses, create centerpieces, festoon wreaths or adorn your tree-or all of the above." —Vogue Knitting (October 15, 2011)

"In addition to the step-by-step instructions for making the Christmas ball and the 55 different designs, in this book you'll find many photographs of vintage ornaments and other sources of inspiration shared by the designers." —Living Crafts (November 2011)

"Featuring the unique designs of Scandinavian duo Arne and Carlos, this book features one basic pattern, instructions on how to knit a ball shape, and then 55 variations or designs pulled from traditional Scandinavian sweaters based on holiday themes. This book would make an excellent gift for a knitter, and the aesthetic fits perfectly into the current DYI trends." —Portland Book Review (November 2012)

Library Journal
Norwegian knitwear designers Arne & Carlos have adapted a popular sideline of their business into patterns for hand knits. Their book includes short stories and images to provide snippets about Christmas and winter in Scandinavian countries, in addition to a charted dictionary of knitting motifs. There is basically one knitting pattern, the basic ball, and then variations on the designs. A mix of Fair Isle and duplicate stitch techniques, the motifs run the gamut of scenes of everyday life, abstracts, nature, and Christmas-specific. The charted patterns for the motifs could easily be adapted to other projects such as mittens. Recommended for advanced beginners comfortable with Fair Isle up to expert knitters, especially those curious about holiday traditions in other countries.

    Beautiful ornaments, clearly written

With 55 beautiful patterns, I can keep my needles flying all year and end up with a mound of hand-knit ornaments for my tree and the trees of family and friends. The directions are clear and simple, although there is nothing particularly easy about knitting on double points in the round in two colors while increasing and decreasing!

I have made two of the designs so far. Each takes me two evenings of knitting. One design can be made twice, by simply reversing the colors: white background instead of colored. I was very pleased with how the balls turned out after stuffing them very full of fiberfill.

If you are a skilled knitter who wants to create special holiday ornaments, you will enjoy this book. It even gives you leeway to create your own designs.
