All Music Guide - Heather Phares
With teen pop trends changing ever more rapidly, the forces behind S Club 7 took action: just ten months after the release of their debut S Club, the inevitably named follow-up 7 arrived. However, in a misguided attempt to make the group's prefab pop sound more mature, 7 ditched their debut's fun, bouncy style in favor of by-the-numbers ballads and a forced eclecticism, both of which muddied S Club 7's sound instead of expanding it. Though their songs were never as recognizable as Britney, Christina, Backstreet, or 'N Sync's, S Club's cheerful, more innocent style at least set them apart from the rest of the teen pop B-list. But by adopting the poses of the style's bigger stars -- as on the Britney-esque "Natural" and the boy-band-lite "Best Friend" -- S Club 7 ends up sounding more faceless than before. Anonymous ballads like "Lately" and "Never Had a Dream Come True" emphasize the fact that the group's voices aren't as strong or interesting as those of teen pop's stars; the would-be dance-pop anthems "Bring the House Down" and "Love Train" (thankfully, not a cover of the O'Jays' classic) confirm just how thin the septet's pipes are. Worse, 7's first half never settles into a comfortable groove. Instead, the album skips from "I'll Keep Waiting"'s fusion of sugary pop, reggae, and hip-hop to "All in Love Is Fair," a lite version of contemporary R&B that whitewashes everything about the style, down to the syncopated, Timbaland-style beats. Wanting to showcase the band's range is understandable, but the disappointing results only prove how little they grew in the ten months between their first and second albums. However, 7 doesn't completely dispose of S Club's fun, carefree sound: "Reach" is a brassy update of the Partridge Family's bubblegum charm, while "Cross My Heart" is a slick pop confection that proves that the group's vocals can have some oomph to them. "I'll Be There" reaches all the way back to the Spice Girls for its fluffy inspiration, and despite its awkward title, "The Colour of Blue" is a shiny pop trifle that sounds like Sheena Easton or Olivia Newton-John could've sung it back in the day. Though S Club 7's fans will undoubtedly gobble up 7 as eagerly as they did S Club, some of them may notice that this time around, the group's candy-coated pop is considerably blander. [The reissue includes two bonus tracks: "Lately" and "Never Had a Dream Come True."]

    This album is number 1!!

I think that Lately outdoes Stevie Wonder by miles (I luv ya Stevie but Brad can sing it VERY well). Reach is great if your feeling blue or very confident! Natural is great if you think that your current lover is the one. I'll Keep Waiting is a very soulful reggae pop anthem like something Bob or Ziggy would've sang.Bring The House Down gives the Jackson Five a fun for their money...an excellent upbeat party vibe. Best Friend is soulful ballad that makes you think of something PDiddy would do as a nod to his homeys. All in Love is Fair really reminds me of TLC's Waterfalls. Love Train is a great 60's tune that outdoes the original performer. Cross My Heart is another TLC vibe that is very very deep and soulful. The Colour of Blue is a great vibe that is Abba style but outdoes them loads. I'll Be There is a Pink Floydish style song which is great! Never Had A Dream Come True is the song that took them to the top of the American charts. This album is great. As for that idiot, Heather, who reviewed it as candy coated, etc well you can stuff it! Their not the least bit weak and well I'd like to see you say it to their face! Oh well. Yep that's my review.

    S Club 7 RULES!!!

S Club 7 is the best pop group I have ever heard! If someone asked me what my favorite album is, I'd say every single one of them! They sing sad songs, romantic songs, dreamy songs, happy songs, jittery songs, and much more. Their songs are made up of beautiful melody and words so who can resist them? I definetly can't. I highly recommend all of you to listen to them if you already haven't. You won't be sorry! GO S CLUB 7!!!

    '7' Reaches For The Stars!

''I never had a dream come true...'' I drift away to sleep as my CD player softly plays this new CD by s club 7. ok, I'm awake now! hehe :) This new CD by the fabulous band, S club 7, is making incredible success in the USA. Unlike their previous CD, this CD includes mostly R'n'B slow songs, with the exception of a few, such as Reach, Bring the House Down, and Love Train. I love this CD so much, it rarely leaves my CD player! I especially love the pop ballads such as Never Had A Dream Come True and Cross My Heart. These songs have such a beautiful tune! I guarantee, if you love pop bands such as N*sync or the Backstreet Boys, you'll just LOVE S club 7's music! So what are you waiting for? Go out and buy the brand-spanking new CD by S Club 7, called '7' You'll just love it!

    S Club 7 rox!

This album ''7'' has to be the best album I have heard. If you listen to it....it can make you feel better about yourself with songs like ''Reach''. And it has some great tunes like ''Natural and ''I'll Be There''. All the songs are top quality. Songs like ''Cross My Heart'' have a good rhythem in it with words you can understand! All the words can be heard clearly. This group sings....not mumbles...it's one of the reasons I love the S. I suggest you buy this album because it has the right mix of pop, R&b, and dance songs for all styles of fans. I give it a 5 star rating...Noah

    Great CD

This cd is probably the best pop r&b mix cd out there. There is not an uncatchy song on the cd. The pop songs help cheer ya up on a gloomy day, and the r&b songs help ya chill out when ur doing homework or just hanging with your friends, the ballads like 2 in a million and never had a dream come true are truly amazing with great back rounds and great voices, i would reccomend this cd to any one who likes a good beat.

    Fan Since 1998

I recently got the new album '7' by S Club 7 and I think that it is simply brilliant! I have been a fan of the British pop group since 1998 when I caught their show 'S Club 7 in Miami.' I have all of their CDs and if you are into pop and want to hear a fresh new group, then this is the CD to check out. They have fast dance songs and beautiful ballads like their current hit 'Never Had A Dream Come True.' Check them out today!!

    A Remakable Follow-up Album!

Seven is a remarkable cd. All 13 songs on this cd truly depict the feelings of the members of the group. The diversity of this album is on of its greatest characteristics.Unlike the S Clubs first cd S Club, Seven is more R'n'B and Soul. Containing more ballads, this cd shows the more sensitive side of the seven while at the same time it keeps up with their pop and Motown roots. Also, this cd allows all of the groups members to have their own solos. All and all I would rate this cd 5/5 stars and give it a thumbs up! Keep Reaching For The Stars! S CLUB 7 ''Never Had A Dream Come True'' The New Single By S CLUB 7 In Stores and On Radio NOW!

    7 [Bonus Tracks]

This compact disk (CD) is a great album by the new group called S Club 7. They are successful in Britain, but they have come over to America with a television series, their first album, this new album, and several television specials on the Fox Family channel. S Club 7 consists of: Tina, Rachel, Jo, Jon, Hannah, Bradley, and Paul. They are all from Britain and were founded by the Spice Girls former manager, Simon Fuller. They have already took over Europe, like the Spice Girls did, but they already have a second album out with little reviews in the United States. The Spice Girls are still around, but they are getting into older music that will be out of date for the teens. That's why S CLub 7 came out. They have the energy for the teen years, and the youth. They have the right tune to catch the ears of young, and teens all around the world if they get the right people to hear them. They have different styles, so they can relate to different teens, and they could be good role models.

    It's great!

Variety and fun! This album is a bit more RnB than the last one('S Club'), but it's still great! Mostly RnB and pop, and a little bit mixed, everything is still first rate! It's for anyone and everyone! The track ''Reach'' promotes a good message and vibe for anyone! It's very catchy as well. The chorus of ''I'll Keep Waiting'' will make you want to chant along! Who doesn't love a good chant? That song is one of the more RnB songs. My personal favourits are ''Natural'' and ''Bring The House Down''. ''Bring The House Down'' will make you want to bounce off the walls...with joy! Great pop song! ''The Colour of Blue'' adds great style unlike any other. It's like pop with...spunk. The song ''Lately'' is re-done from Stevie Wonder's version with modern style and class. Great album to listen to anyday, anytime.

    sEvEn

''7'' is as uplifting as the first album. But this time SClub7 reach out to their older fans. With more calm yet catchy, upbeat songs. Like ''Natural'' and ''I'll Be There''. ''7'' has great variety. Tina finally shows us what she's got in ''I'll Be There'' ...cool song. Great party music. Shake your booty!!!

    Bring the House Down!

If you're a pop music fan, have I got a CD for you... You've probably heard ''Never Had A Dream Come True'' if you listen to the radio or watch MTV. It's a beatiful little song, and a sappy one, but that is just the tip of the S Club 7 iceberg. Their new album, ''7,'' is one of the most diverse pop albums out at the moment- and a quality one at that! From the sublime cheese of the album opener, ''Reach,'' through the slick, classy R&B of ''Natural'' and ''Cross My Heart,'' to guilty pleasures like ''Love Train,'' S Club 7 have covered all the bases. If a great pop record is what you're after, ''7'' is just what you're looking for!

I think that the CD is really good. They have everything from energetic dance songs to slow ballads. It is a good mixture of songs. I really enjoy listening to Love Train. I think it is the best song on the whole CD.
