A former vigilante, turned government super soldier experiment, emerges from his self-imposed exile to challenge the new status quo. Can Vincent Black, with his makeshift team of unlikely allies, overcome the demons of his past to help preserve the future of humanity?

Reviewed by Paul J. for Readers Favorite The immoral Zodiac set

Reviewed by Paul J. for Readers Favorite

The immoral Zodiac set off a fire storm throughout the world, setting off bombs that leveled cities and killing millions. After a rather large setback, he is now even more determined to unleash his final solution upon the shattered remnants of humanity. With his mostly lobotomized minions, the Grand Army, he will stop at nothing to accomplish his objective of world domination. The only thing that stands in Zodiac's way are the rebels of Militia 28 led by Night Viper, a man highly trained with heightened strength, speed, fighting skills, and mental powers that make him a very worthy opponent for Zodiac. But, Militia 28 is very small in comparison to the multitudes of the Grand Army. How can they hope to defeat a seemingly invulnerable foe like Zodiac?

Apocalyptic action adventures come in all shapes and sizes. This is a big book and the reader gets quickly drawn into the story. From the opening pages the reader is assailed with action, death and destruction. As with many sequels, the story takes off right where the last one left off. This can be good, and bad. It is good because the action continues, but it can be bad if the characters are not quickly and fully reintroduced. I feel the author could have spent a little more time reintroducing the players. Also, a few paragraphs, possibly in a flashback format, would provide the reader, one that possibly hadn’t read the first installment, with a little more understanding of the current situation. This in no way takes away from the quality of the story. Overall, "7 Scorpions: Revolution" is a well-written story that I really enjoyed.

7 Scorpions: Rebellion by Mike Saxton
    Release Date: May 13th, 2010
    Publisher: Strategic Book Group
    Page Count: 443

The world was turned upside down by the swift and brutal attack of a dictator known only as Zodiac. Planting flash bombs in every major city across the world, he detonated them simultaneously, sending the survivors into chaos and anarchy.

In the wake of the destruction, Zodiac unleashed the dreaded Seekers, a group with the ability to radiate an aura of intense fear, which would complete the enslavement and extermination of humanity.

A former vigilante, turned government super soldier experiment, emerges from his self-imposed exile to challenge the new status quo. Can Vincent Black, with his makeshift team of unlikely allies, overcome the demons of his past to help preserve the future of humanity?

What Stephanie Thinks: Saxton has a completely original and well-planned story going on in his first installment of the 7 Scorpions series. The characters are engaging, amiable, and while not 100% realistic, do together, create the perfect cast of "action film" stars we love to read about.

In a time of the world's despair, one man, one villain, attempts to take over and recreate society, and the protagonist, super-human Vincent Black -- an example of what results when the government messes with things it shouldn't mess with -- seems to be the only key in stopping him. A myriad of futuristic technologies, fantastical creatures, and gruesome, nearly video-gamesque violence is captured between the pages of this dystopian novel.

While I think the story itself is a keeper, I can't say the same thing about the writing style. It doesn't flow properly, and it's very mediocre and repetitive. It's something I would expect from someone who is not a writer by trade, but still has the perseverance to carry on such an imaginative narrative. While not overly lush (I consider it the exact opposite, actually -- it's quite acute), Saxton's technique still unnecessarily detailed; for example, characters' clothing choices are always elaborated upon, there is always a dialogue tag, the same punchlines are used over and over again, et cetera.

There are definitely some moments I wince while reading -- just because of the awkward or overrated wording -- but if you're in for an adventurous, action-packed read, definitely consider Rebellion to keep you intrigued.

Stephanie Loves: "Lexi gave Josh a little poke in the ribs. 'C'mon Josh, where's your sense of adventure?
'I left it in my other pants,' he replied sarcastically." -- see what I mean by unnecessary?? This line would have been grand, had "he replied sarcastically" been left out. We KNOW the phrase was a sardonic attempt at humor. We don't need a narration to elaborate upon it.

Radical Rating: 7 hearts- A few flaws here and there, but overall enjoyable.

    like watching an action movie

There was so much action packed into this book, it really did feel as if you were watching a movie instead of reading. It started nearly in the first few pages of the book, and it continued all the way until the end. It was purely awesome to read.

Two characters really stood out for me. Vincent and Lexi. Lexi's real awesome. She's not the typical damsel in distress and her present 'medical condition' (for lack of a better term) is different, but makes sense in this plot. Oh I liked reading about her. Her lack of fear makes her reckless and straight in your face type of attitude, it's fun to read and her straight forwardness sometimes shocks other characters (it's fun when she makes them uncomfortable). Vincent is the complete opposite (somewhat) but he makes a pretty good hero. He's modest and shies away from leadership (which is somehow dumped on him anyway). However he kicks serious butt. He reminds me a lot of David Valentine from the Vampire Earth series except more enhanced and super powered.

The plot overall was a good read. It was straight forward and carried through pretty quick. There are quite a few characters in the book, but I noticed they were grouped together so it wasn't too hard to figure out who was who. There was one particular character that did a complete 360 personality change which was completely unexpected to me - although this was good as I enjoy being blindsided by these sorts of things. It keeps me more interested in the plot.

Several things I thought could have improved, there last third of the book sort of slows down - understandably so, because they're preparing for another battle. Yet I can't help but think it could have been several chapters shorter, it did drag a little. Another thing, one of the characters just drops out of the book. Entirely. The reader is unaware of what happens to him, as he drops out of it midway in the book. I actually forgot all about him until it dawned on me after finishing it. I'm sure - hopefully this will be explained in the books following although just to drop him entirely midway in the novel was a little odd.

Other than those few things, I greatly enjoyed reading this book. I believe there's two more after this one, so I'm looking forward to what's going to happen next. It's got a great ending, and leaves a lot of room for more to come!

    A highly enjoyable sci-fi adventure

Science fiction is such a wide and wonderful genre, don't you agree? And this book is a perfect example of all the things that make it fun. The hero, Vincent Black, is virtually indestructible and has a single-minded goal of whupping the bad guys. The heroine, Lexi, is tough, pretty and physically incapable of fear.

Vincent is an interesting character. As he will tell you if you ask him, he is what happens when the government plays around with things they shouldn't. He comes across as being a man of mystery, but he is actually very matter-of-fact about who he is and what he has done...except for the things that are a mystery even to him. He and Lexi make an excellent team...and perhaps more someday?

The story seems pretty typical at first, but it becomes more complicated as you read.. At first, you see the evil warlord who causes death and destruction everywhere he goes with thousands of faceless minions to do his bidding. But then you see the face of a minion and it is not what you expect. The lines between good and evil blur a little and your sympathies shift just an inch. That is when it starts to get really interesting.

While this book has a several dark themes such as past rape and abuse as well as current deaths and torture, the writing style is so...enthusiastic. You can see how much the author loves writing and how he likes to show off his characters, which adds an element of fun. Vincent can be just a tad too dramatic at times, or Zodiac can call someone a maggot at the top of his lungs, and it made me smile. The only small problem I had with the writing was that sometimes the dialogue seemed a little awkward to me.

I would recommend this novel to lovers of science fiction, video games and the Terminator movies. :)

    Fun and exciting

I am going to be honest, I love when things blow up! This book is packed with action and adventure. I have enjoyed learning to love the super soldier with a heart, Vincent. Heroes rarely seek the office and it is the same for him. If I were caught in a post apocalyptic world where a madman is enslaving the world and destroying everything about us that makes us human I would be drawn to a hero just like him. I can't wait to see what happens next!

    Amazing book, don't miss it!

I wonder what can I say about this book that will make you want it... I wish I could give one to all of you. I read sci-fi, maybe is not the genre I love the most but I can enjoy it. I didn't enjoy this book, I completely loved it.
Why you ask? First of all, what is described in this book can, very well, happen in the real world. I believe this is what had me turning the pages all night long. Yes, all night long, I barely sleep last night because I promise you all, I needed to know what was going to happen next.

True to be told there's a few scenes that were a little to much for me but in the end my desire to keep reading was stronger.

What you are going to find in this book is suspense, is thriller, you will find yourself on the edge of your couch and don't worry if you suddenly realize you need air... I stopped breathing a few times myself.

But let me show you my point of view of this book: Our world, as we know it, is already destroyed. There was a psychopath named Zodiac that planted a series of flash bombs in all the big cities of the world and all of them exploded at the same time creating chaos and millions of deaths... After this Zodiac becomes the ruler of the whole world and, in order to stay as such he seeks every rebel to destroy them.

And then we find the hero of this book, Vincent Black who finds himself as an unwilling participant in a government experiment of super-soldiers. He is the only one who survives it. With the help of other rebels like Alexis Hera (a woman, believe me, that you wouldn't want to mess up with) or Andromeda he will give and set the basics of the ultimate rebellion: Face the enemy or die trying. He will show them that teamwork is the key to surpass all the difficulties.

But what I liked the most is that we are also allow to see the motivations and feelings of the "bad-side" and somehow, it gives a different and awesome depth to the story.

My recomendation? If you like sci-fi books read it, don't miss it. And if you don't like sci-fi then give it a try. I hope this book one day will become a movie... it would be amazing!

    A Compelling Page-Turner

(Official Apex Reviews Rating: 4.5 Stars)

When a vicious malcontent known only as "Zodiac" sets off a series of flash bombs in every major city in America, it quickly brings the shocked and terrified nation to its knees. For his coup de grâce, Zodiac unleashes the deadly Seekers, whose brutal brand of swift "justice" is designed to ensure instant enslavement and the elimination of any remnants of rebellion. In the wake of all the destruction, Vincent Black, a former vigilante and government super soldier, emerges from self-imposed exile to thwart Zodiac's nefarious efforts - but is it too late to save what's left of humanity from the deadly dictator's fatal grasp...?

7 Scorpions: Rebellion is a riveting Sci-Fi/Action tale. Skillfully blending vividly fashioned characters with breathtaking suspense, author Mike Saxton takes a highly believable scenario and gives it just enough of a fantastical twist to make it a compelling page-turner. Though the plot is anything but original, what makes 7 Scorpions: Rebellion stand out is Saxton's thoroughly unique writing style. With a seamless mix of humor, drama, and action, Saxton inexorably draws the reader in to his imaginative world - in which the unfolding of horrific events doesn't appear to be too far away from the terroristic realities we could someday face...

The first of what promises to be a highly entertaining trilogy, 7 Scorpions: Rebellion is a solid debut that more than holds its own. A recommended read.

    New fast-paced sci-fi trilogy

May 7th was the day the world changed. Daily life was interrupted by the voice of Zodiac, a man who called himself, "hatred incarnate." Sending a video feed through every cellular phone, computer and television, he warned humanity that the world was about to be purged of all people. Moments later colossal explosions destroyed every large city in the world. Now all Zodiac had to do was level smaller cities and towns, as well as kill the few remaining survivors. And all this action happened within the first two pages of 7 Scorpions: Rebellion. Once the reader is introduced to the history of the "Flash Storm," and the destruction it caused, author Mike Saxton takes us to Hartford, Connecticut where we meet a mysterious man with amazing fighting abilities. This man, Vincent Black, was singlehandedly taking on the Zodiac's "Seekers," armed, robot-like fighters who send out a "fear aura" to keep their foes in check. But Vincent is immune to the Seekers fear aura and he seems to be enjoying this battle. While killing many Seekers, Vincent is also able to save three rebel fighters desperately trying to escape. Once he gets the rebels to safety, he decides it is time to come out of his self-imposed exile and join the revolt against Zodiac. Vincent and his new friends head to upstate New York to a government complex where, it turns out, Vincent was given his superpower abilities. The amazing fighting machine was altered as part of a government project and is able to sense when danger is near, heal at incredible rates, and posses the strength of several men. As the rebel band slowly grows in numbers, Vincent becomes their leader. Will the rag-tag band of fighters be able to thwart the advancing Seeker army and stop Zodiac before he achieves total world domination? The action keeps coming in this fast-paced novel as Vincent and his friends try to outwit Zodiac. As they struggle to keep their hiding place secret, they also urgently seek to discover how Zodiac maintains total control over his army of Seekers. If they are to fight these zombie-like humans, they will have to ascertain the secret to the Seekers' fear aura. Can it be done? It was easy to get involved in the lives of the rebel fighters in 7 Scorpions. Vincent, while being a heroic fighter for the cause, was very human. He had several "issues" to deal with, the least of which is how/why he became such an incredible fighter. Lexi, another fighter who is not affected by the Seekers' fear aura, is Vincent's counterpart and equal in many ways. While the rebel camp and their exploits were the highlight of this book, I found some of the antagonists, with their frequently campy dialogue and clichéd actions a bit over the top. Zodiac, with his mesh armor, spikes extending from his shoulders and knees, as well as a black, flowing cape reminded me more of an old Batman cartoon than a sinister madman for today's readers. An evil scientist and a captured commander, who at first appeared to be pure evil like their leader, gave up clues to Zodiac's plans far too easily. With dialogue such as " Hmph, you are aware of less than I thought. Oh well, I will enjoy educating one as lovely as you," (pg. 256), it was hard to take many of these potential conquerors seriously. Overall, however, the story was unique and a lot of fun. I look forward to seeing what the author has in store for Vincent and his group of rebels in the next book. Quill says: A good start to a new science fiction
