7 Wishes

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Lydia Vanderloo
Like many before her -- Jakob Dylan, Sean Lennon, and Louise Goffin, to name a few -- Shana Morrison, daughter of lauded rock singer-songwriter Van Morrison, raises expectations even before she opens her mouth. Happily, the younger Morrison makes good on the promise of Dad's genes with 7 Wishes, a vibrant album that succeeds with its own blend of rock, blues, folk, and pop . For starters, her voice easily shifts gears from petal-soft and folksy, as on the Nanci Griffith-like "A Song for the Broken," to gritty and blues-inflected, as on the coy "Cherry on Top," with its hints of Bonnie Raitt. Her songs are equally sturdy, with memorable rockers like the gospel-juiced "God Must Love Me" and the sweltering blues track "Day After Yes" nicely balanced by more delicate moments such as the buoyant, Alanis-like "I Spy," and the soul-searching "Connection," which is laced with programmed beats and entwining sitar and guitar lines. Morrison also tackles two of her father's tunes, amping up his "Naked in the Jungle" with whirling organs, a searing electric guitar lead, and her own raw delivery, and approaching his "Sometimes We Cry," a newer song, with delicacy and grace. One of Shana Morrison's wishes was surely answered with this gusty, self-assured album.
All Music Guide - Robert L. Doerschuk
Born with a pedigree that might have hung like a millstone around her neck, the daughter of Van Morrison turns in a refreshing, if somewhat pedestrian solo debut on 7 Wishes. Her songs reflect little of her father's influence, and she sings in a light, accessible style that few would associate with Celtic music or the blues. Her voice is alternately assertive and insinuating; on certain tunes she slips in and out of character, going from saucy and flirtatious on "Cherry on Top" to some slightly uncomfortable ersatz-sanctified riffing on "God Must Love Me"; these transformations suggest an unsettled persona more than insight into diverse lyrics. When the elder Morrison makes his guest appearance on "Sometimes We Cry," his unmistakable intensity seems to ground her; even before he starts his primal chant on the outgoing chorus, Shana connects directly with the words and digs deep into the feel, showing none of the superficial role-playing that colors some of her other performances. With a team of Nashville session aces providing the backup, Morrison turns in a professional performance that, perversely, might have benefited had she showed more derivative inclinations.
