( 12 )

Overview

The power of The 72 Names of God operates strictly on a soul level, not a physical one. It's about spirituality, not religiosity. Instead of being limited by the differences that divide people, the wisdom of the Names transcends humanity's age-old quarrels and belief systems to deal with one common bond that unifies all people and nations as one — the human soul.

New York 2003 Hardcover First Edition. 217 pages. Hardcover with dustjacket. Brand new book. JUDAICA. The ancient Kabbalist Rav Shimon bar Yochai wrote in the Zohar that it was ... Moses, not God, who parted the Red Sea, allowing the Israelites to narrowly escape Pharaoh and the Egyptian army. In order to accomplish this apparent miracle, Moses combined the power of certainty with a very powerful spiritual technology. He had possession of a formula that literally gave him access to the subatomic realm of nature. The formula Moses used to overcome the laws of nature has been hidden in the Zohar for 2000 years. This formula is called the 72 Names of God. Not names like Betty, Bill and Barbara, but 72 sequences composed of Hebrew letters that have the extraordinary power to overcome the laws of nature in all forms, including human nature. Though this formula is encoded in the literal Biblical story of the parting of the Red Sea, no rabbi, scholar, or priest was aware of the secret. It was known only to a handful Read more Show Less

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
This self-help book from Rabbi Berg (The Power of Kabbalah) draws upon the "72 names" of God mentioned in the Kabbalah to empower individuals to embrace life more fully. Berg says that when Moses experienced his do-or-die moment on the shores of the Red Sea, God spoke to the Israelites in three verses as recorded in the Book of Exodus-each verse consisting of 72 Hebrew letters. Encoded in those letters was the "technology" the Israelites needed to escape the situation on their own, without further divine assistance. Berg writes that contemporary seekers can also tap into this power and energy by learning about, and calling upon, the 72 names of God. The book can be shallow, particularly in its proof-texting of both Kabbalah and the findings of modern scientists to demonstrate "uncanny congruencies between astrophysics and Kabbalah concerning Creation," or its rapid-fire determination to whiz through each name in a single page. Although the device of using the 72 names is a refreshing addition to self-help literature, the end result is the same: the book offers individuals a relatively quick and painless way to achieve joy, financial prosperity, sexual fulfillment and spiritual enlightenment. The real star here is not the writing but the layout; rarely has a Kabbalah book been so easy on the eyes. Trendy designs, chic photographs and illustrations, and even a little comic-book-style graphic art enhance the book and maintain reader interest. (May) Forecast: Berg's name recognition as a teacher at the Kabbalah Centre, spiritual adviser to celebrities such as Madonna and Rob Lowe and son of the legendary Rav Berg, will help move this title, which has an initial print run of 50,000 copies. Read an Excerpt

F O R W A R D

In the pages of this book, you will find a set of supremely powerful spiritual tools, an entire technology of healing, protection, and positive change. Yet for 3400 years this technology lay hidden in the letters of three biblical verses, each containing 72 letters. These verses describe the miraculous parting of the Red Sea before the people of Israel, as they fled bondage in Pharaoh's Egypt. As you are about to discover, the mystical power of the Hebrew letters that parted those waters can likewise part whatever Red Sea now confronts you in your own life. In fact, I can say without exaggeration in these pages you will find not just another technology or an advanced technology, but all technology-whether of the 21st century, or the 30th, or the 50th-for the elimination of chaos from your life.

The revelation of these letters after many centuries is itself a miracle, one that was accomplished only in the past 80 years by the great kabbalists Rav Yehuda Ashlag and Rav Yehuda Brandwein. Through their work, the technology of the 72 Names of God has become available to everyone, together with the knowledge of how to activate that technology and manifest its benefits in our daily lives.

Let me emphasize the fact that the 72 Names are intended for all humanity. Like the words of the Bible and the Hebrew letters that comprise them, the Names are the property of no ethnic group or religious identity. They can and should be used by everyone to confront the accelerating chaos and negativity that afflicts our world. Indeed, if they are not used, only disappointment, frustration, and despair can result. With this in mind, it astonishes me to realize that in all my years of traditional religious studies, I was never made aware that this technology even existed. From earliest childhood I had read and re-read the verses containing the 72 Names, but I never knew of the combinations of letters that were hidden in those verses or of their unique powers. And I was certainly not alone in lacking this awareness. In this book, therefore, you will very quickly gain knowledge and capabilities that had been denied even to scholars who had devoted their lives to study and explanation of the sacred writings.

In Yehuda's book a great power awaits you. As you begin to explore this power and put it to use, I would like to emphasize two points. First, the 72 Names are a technology for asserting the power of human consciousness over physicality. That is, the power of mind over matter, which Kabbalah has always understood and which science is just now beginning to grasp.

However, the Names themselves depend on your individual consciousness, and on your commitment to what the kabbalists call proactive behavior. This is another term that I had never heard until I began studying Kabbalah, yet it's the foundation of the whole technology of the 72 Names. What is proactive behavior? First and foremost, it is a stepping back from reactive impulses, for there is no way we can have consciousness of God to say nothing of God's consciousness-unless we step back. Without this proactive behavior, even this most powerful of all technologies cannot possibly work for us. Whenever it seems that misfortune has suddenly been thrust upon you, step back. This does not mean acceptance of the circumstances if someone slaps you in the face, you might indeed hit them back-but it does mean a level of consciousness above mere reactivity. The technology of the 72 Names can and will work for you, but not without proactive behavior. My second point is related to the problems caused by reactive impulses, but concerns specific difficulties related to ego. In the biblical text that is the foundation of the 72 Names, ego is personified by the Pharaoh of Egypt. As the ego driven impulses in our own lives draw us away from growth and transformation, Pharaoh is always reversing himself in absurd and self-destructive directions. He gives the Israelites their freedom, but then changes his mind and sends his army after them and ultimately into the waters of the Red Sea. Ego will always play this game, especially with decisions that lead you in a proactive direction.

Once again, step back from this impulse. Be aware that your "normal" state of being in the physical world is reactive consciousness. We are always being called upon to play ego's game and using the 72 Names effectively required a focused effort to move beyond that. When you commit yourself to proactive behavior and to the renunciation of ego games, the technology of the 72 Names is truly within your grasp. Very simply put, this is the power of mind over matter. This is the ability to eliminate every kind of chaos, whether in the form of intangible fears and negative emotions, or the all-too-tangible challenges of cancer and other serious illnesses. Consciousness is the power that underlies every action and event in the material world. Whether it is the simple act of raising your arm or the spontaneous healing of life-threatening disease the process begins in consciousness. The 72 Names of God are the bridge between this power of consciousness and its manifestation in the physical realm. May you use them to gain the beautiful, wonderful miracles that await us now and in the future for yourself and for all humankind.

WOULD HAVE GIVEN 5 STARS, BUT...

This book deserves 5 stars for content, but I gave only 4 since it is hard to read in some places due to silver print (yes, silver) on pastel colored pages, and white print on silver pages! Also, the size, shape and binding are less than useful for serious study or meditation. We need a book that is easy to hold and lays flat for this most excellent subject matter. Hopefully the future will bring a 'student's manual' with the same exceptional text! Overall, A GREAT BOOK.........J.R., Colo.Spgs.

    Amazing

This book a key to life, a key to the universe and a key to understanding. The format is highly visual. It is spiritual eye candy. The book is presented informatively yet simplistic. It is so easy to read and gives you each page as art. I have to say, if you are not familiar with Kabbalah, the information might seem overly simplistic. Read more about Kabbalah first. Either way, this book is a must have, no matter what your religion or spiritual beliefs.

I have to agree with one of the reviewer that I also found the hard to read in some places due to silver print on pastel colored pages, and white print on silver pages. Also, the size, shape and binding are less than useful for serious study or meditation. I found this very hard on my eyes. Other wise this is a fabulous book. I read in it everyday. It has changed my life. It helped me when I was down and lifted me up. I do not follow any organized religion but Kabbalah has helped me in many ways that organized religion has failed to do.

    Highly Recommended

If you are at a place in your life where you are reflective and ready to grow, this is a lovely, enlightening and inspirational book. It also provides a good overview of Kabbalah - what it is and where it comes from. On any given day, I like to randomly open the book and review the concept revealed (coincidence? or is it a concept I need to be thinking about on that particular day?) This is a book you will cherish and use as a reference again and again.

    daily meditation tool

All you have to do is randomly select a page each day and scan the hebrew name for God you've selected. Each symbol opens up a channel of light and realization for you to improve life. I also focus on the symbols when doing yoga breathing excercies. Great coffe table book.

    Fantastic!

This book is a combination of great photography, colors, and information. Easily one of my favorites. Unlike many others, this is so understandable and accessible. Exactly what I'd been looking for for a long time. Thanks, Rabbi Berg!
