This collection brings together all the band's hits -- riff-driven rockers like the still-uplifting "Shine" as well as gentler songs like the piano-laced ballad "Run" -- and adds a pair of new songs sure to appeal to the Soul-stirrers out there. "Energy," as befits its title, harnesses Roland's trademark blend of yearning and hope to a driving (but not overpowering) hunk of nicely hewn rock. "Next Homecoming," the other new addition to the band's catalog, is more pensive, pairing a subtle dynamism with a forward-looking narrative that's intended to make the listener think as well as feel. There's nothing terribly fancy about that formula, but when you get down to it, Collective Soul are one of the few modern-day chart denizens trying to make it work.

Collective Soul had just enough good singles to make you think that a collection such as 7even Year Itch would be a great guilty pleasure for all of those who hummed along to "Shine" even as they bought Nine Inch Nails and Alice in Chains discs. And it is true that there are some very good songs here, such as the assured "Shine," the tempered power ballad "December," and the terrific Urge Overkill rip "Gel," perhaps not their biggest hit but arguably their finest moment. These, of course, are all on 7even Year Itch, but there aren't quite enough other cuts in this 13-track collection to convince the doubters (the non-chronological sequencing doesn't really help matters, either). But even if this collection doesn't make the case for being a great populist, critically shunned band (Stone Temple Pilots hold that title for the '90s), it still does summarize Collective Soul's career well, and will be of interest to the casual listeners who enjoyed certain songs on the radio during the heady post-grunge days of the second half of the '90s.

    A fine collection if a bit short

    This is a very good hits package even if some key songs are missing. It's still well worth owning. I certainly appreciate that the small booklet included gives us the lyrics instead of the usual boring notes. By the way: What a GREAT Band!

    No "Where the River Flows"?

    This is an incredible CD in my opinion. The only reason why I didn't give it five stars is becuase "Where the River Flows" was left off the compilation for some reason. I think that's one of their best songs too. I still listen to this album all the time and I still haven't gotten tired of it. I recommend that anyone who likes anything by Collective Soul buy this album. You won't be dissappointed!!!

    "What were you thinking"

    how could you guys put out a "GREATEST HITS" collection and not include "where the river flows" ??? A major omission as far as I am concerned !!! It is a super CD just the same! M. McFee

    A solid band with solid performances

    When Collective Soul first hit the radio waves in 1994, I wasn't sure what to think. Then I found myself cranking up their songs...In 1995 ''Gel'' hit the airwaves and I also saw them open for Van Halen, and I was hooked. Year after year, their songs remain some of my favorites, whether it's the hard hitting sound of ''Heavy'' or ''Why Part 2'', or the more relaxed, melodious songs like ''Run''. This CD highlights their most popular songs, but their other releases offer gems that could be on a ''Best Of...'' release I can't believe it's been 7 years already.

    Really 5 Stars for the band...

    I have owned ''Hints, Allegations & Things Left Unsaid'', ''Disciplined Breadown'', ''Collective Soul (yellow case)'', ''Dosage'', and ''Blender'' since they were each released. They are consistently excellent musicians, with intriguing lyrics and I really really wish they would release some new stuff!!!!!

    if u dont like collective soul,u dont have soul

    collective soul is one awesome band..collective soul is my soul..every album by em are just amazing..this new album contains thier coolest tracks..the new songs are great too..collective soul greatest hits cant be fit in just a cd..we need 2 cds at least..and..however i think the no of tracks are quite less in this album..there should have been more tracks.

    Buy it.

    If you're like me, there have always been groups that you have loved over the years and have always meant to buy this or that cd by them, but just never get around to it. Well, Collective Soul was one of them for me. This album lets you get all the songs you've always loved in one cd that will throw you back on a mid-90's nostalgia trip. And the two extra songs are great as well. This is highly recommended. It is a must for the nostalgia-trip music buyer.

    Shine On!

    Collective Soul (and frontman/songwriter Ed Roland)was one of the most successful, yet unnoticed bands of the 1990's. Nearly every single they released hit #1 on Modern Rock airplay, yet they have yet to headline a concert larger than a theatre. Perhaps this set will help change that. All the tracks are good....I only neglect giving the ''5th star'' because of the omission of ''Perfect Day'', the duet with Elton John from 2000.

    Buy This NOW

    Collective Soul is an outstanding band, and this is a compilation of some of their best sellers and two brand new songs. So I strongly reccomend this album and all other collective soul albums, you do not have a cd collection unless you own all of collective souls albums.
