To those of us who live in the DC area, Danny Gatton reigned as "The World's Greatest Unknown Guitar Player." He crossed all the lines (rock, jazz, rockabilly, blues, bluegrass) and blurred them - his lightning fast playing melded them into a sound we hadn't heard before. Nobody could (or can, in my opinion) wring the pathos out of a bluesy ballad like Danny Gatton! He made a lot of great music (check out "The Humbler," "Untouchable" and "Redneck Jazz" to name a few), and this disc is a good introduction to that artistry. All of the cuts are great, but listen especially to "Fandingus." Gatton hooked his "Magic Dingus box" (an amazing device he created himself) to his Telecaster and made magic. Danny Gatton left us in October 1994, and, musically, our souls are poorer for it. Buy this one (and any others you can find). His music is a helluva ride!

Gatton's Telecaster really shines on diverse material ranging from Martin Denny's "Quiet Village" to the roadhouse shuffle "Funky Mama" to the off-the-wall rendition of the theme to The Simpsons. Kudos to Elektra for having the ...
