Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ellen Welty
Is there anything you want to know about the Titanic? Chances are good that this book has the answer. Published originally in 1998, this volume of fascinating facts has been re-released to commemorate the one hundredth anniversary of the sinking of the ship that was supposed to be unsinkable. The giant ship was commissioned by White Star. Along with its two sister ships, it was the largest in existence at the time. It was built in Belfast, Ireland and launched in May, 1911. Its first voyage across the ocean was also its last. It struck an iceberg on April 14, 1912, and sank less than three hours later, early on the morning of April 15, 1912. Record-keeping was not accurate about the number of people aboard, but it is estimated that there were over 2200; less than a third of those survived. The facts in this volume are well-researched and it is the kind of book that elementary and middle school readers love, with interesting details that they can use in book reports and to impress grandparents. It is nicely arranged in a rough timeline, but it includes information about the children who were aboard the ship and what happened to them as well as to the other passengers. It also discusses the James Cameron movie about the tragedy and mentions other films about it. There is a glossary, an index, and a list of other sources that readers can consult to find out more. I love this book! Just like the title says, this book is filled with amazing answers about the Titanic! I've enjoyed reading several non-fiction books on the Titanic lately and found this simple, childlike book to be equally informational. Almost any question you have about the Titanic is answered in this book. Adults & kids alike will take pleasure in reading through all the Q&A... all 882 1/2 of them. And by the way---aren't you curious what the "half" (from 882 1/2) of an answer could be?

We bought this book because our son was studying the Titanic in school. He found the whole story quite interesting and had so many questions for us that this book was a God send. Being only in the third grade, our son found himself telling others, things that the ship had and feeling quite proud of himself. We found it all interesting too that other family members have asked to borrow the book as well!
