Military Writers BOOK OF THE YEAR- Florida Writer's Association BOOK OF THE YEAR

9/11 Ordinary People: Extraordinary Heroes vividly recalls for us the catastrophic legacy of the most destructive terrorist attack in our country's history. This book snaps the events of that day, the Pearl Harbor of our generation, into razor-sharp focus." - Congressman Peter T. King, Chairman, Homeland Security Committee

This moving portrayal takes you face to face with the exceptional bravery of ordinary people who found themselves caught in the deadliest terrorist attack the country has ever faced. Witness the dramatic events through the eyes of the first responders going into the face of danger to help evacuate 25,000 people.

The book tells the gripping story of people barely escaping, some buried alive and others trapped for hours under building debris. First responders describe what it was like to search for survivors among the wreckage, while others explain their duties as members of clergy and the American Red Cross. In addition, Merrill interviews widows and family members of some of the first responders who gave their lives to help others.

Editorial Reviews

unknown - K. Parsons
9/11 Ordinary People: Extraordinary Heroes is an excellent read. It is so well written that you the reader feel as if you are standing on the street while everything is happening around you. After every chapter I had to put the book down and breathe. This is a book that every American should read. September 11, 2001 Never Forget!
Ponte Vedra Beach, FL - Bernal Quiros
The book succeeds in describing the devastation of 9/11 in human and highly personal terms. Television cannot show the images nor adequately describe the first hand accounts the book relates. I know of no other 9/11 themed book that accomplishes as much, or that accomplishes it as poignantly and elegantly. As we near the 10th year anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy, I am hopeful that many Americans will refresh their memories of the event by reading this book.
Sun City Center, FL - Donald Neste
As a history buff, I've been reading other articles and books about 9/11 and came across a very interesting book called 9/11 Ordinary People: Extraordinary Heroes, which contains numerous stories about the survivors and their struggles, along with accounts of many not as fortunate.

During the anniversary of this life-changing disaster, it behooves us all to remember those who were most affected by 9/11 and to be thankful for the freedoms we still enjoy.

Highly Recommended - The 9/11 human story told by those caught in the eye of storm

I highly recommend this book. It's clear that the first responders to the infamous 9/11 attacks found an author they could trust to tell their story in a respectful manner, without sparing the graphic and torturous impact of this event. When we mentor our children on the priceless values of honor, integrity, loyalty and freedom, this book could serve as a moral compass.

    Thank You Colonel Merrill

Through his passionate dedication, Colonel Merrill has embraced the painful and ultimate sacrifice given by these altruistic protectors. Reflected on the heartbreak, strength, and resolve of the Family members. Engraved into the hearts of the reader the actions, emotions, and eternal memories of the rescue survivors. The history of America in one of it's darkest hours, and the people who refused to give up, and rose to their fullest humanistic potential. Thank you Colonel Merrill, and God Bless America.

    A tough read.

I started this book on 9/11 of this year as my own private way of remembering. I got over halfway through it but just couldn't bring myself to finish it. It's pretty intense and you can't turn a single page without being overwhelmed with emotions and a tremendous sense of loss. It's not for the faint of heart, and some of the descriptions get pretty graphic. But the stories also show the good in people, in the worst of times.

    Great Stories, but...

I enjoyed reading the stories in this book. There were many I'd never heard before & they were good ones.

However, the author chooses to tell each story separately so you have to relive the terror over & over again in the retelling of each new story. Some overlap with the telling of someone else's point of view whose story was just told. This made me weary. I do understand though that it would be difficult to keep track of all the stories that are told if they were weaved into one long time line. I thought it made for repetive reading.

    Touching

This has a good collection of stories that show you the brutal scenes of what happened on this sad day in history. The stories really open your eyes to things that you didnt hear on the news. The writing wasn't very well at all but the stories themselves are sad and touching. God bless those who lost their lives on this day and families of those. I hope your doing well.
