Atlantida, Or, The Queen of Atlantis
It is 1896 in the French Algerian Sahara. Two officers, André de Saint-Avit and Jean Morhange investigate the disappearance of their fellow officers. While doing so, they are drugged and kidnapped by a Tarqui warrior, the procurer for the monstrous Queen Antinea. Antinea, descendant of the rulers of Atlantis, has a cave wall with 120 niches carved into it, one for each of her lovers. Only 53 have been filled; when all 120 have been filled, Antinea will sit atop a throne in the centre of the cave and rest forever. Saint-Avit is unable to resist Antinea's charms. By her will, he murders the asexual Morhange. Ultimately, he is able to escape and get out of the desert alive. (Wikipedia)

About the Author

Pierre Benoît (1886-1962) was a French novelist whose works captivated readers with their blend of adventure, romance, and exotic locales. Born in Albi, France, Benoît's early life was marked by extensive travel, a result of his father's career as a military officer. This exposure to diverse cultures profoundly influenced his literary imagination, infusing his novels with rich, atmospheric settings that transported readers to far-flung corners of the world.Benoît's literary career took off in the early 20th century, and he quickly became known for his ability to weave intricate plots with historical and mythological elements. His works often explored themes of forbidden love, the clash of civilizations, and the quest for eternal truths, resonating with a generation grappling with the aftermath of World War I.A member of the prestigious Académie Française, Benoît's influence extended beyond his novels. He was a vocal advocate for the preservation of French cultural heritage and often engaged in public debates on literary and political issues. His stance against the rise of totalitarian regimes in Europe during the 1930s and 1940s earned him both admirers and detractors, highlighting his commitment to intellectual freedom and human rights.Benoît's legacy is also marked by his impact on contemporary writers. His narrative style and thematic concerns can be seen in the works of later adventure and fantasy authors, who drew inspiration from his ability to blend reality with the fantastical. Despite facing criticism for some of his more controversial views, Benoît remains a significant figure in French literature, celebrated for his contributions to the genre of adventure fiction and his enduring influence on the literary landscape.
