About the Author

Dr Gérard Mick is a neurologist and a pain expert at Grenoble hospital (France) specialized in neuropatic pain and headaches. He is the founder and the president of a pain evaluation and treatment unit in Grenoble area. He is also deputy director of a national health network and author of many articles and books dedicated to daily management of chronic pain.

Description: This is an English translation of a 2013 French monograph that reviews the prevalence, pathophysiology, risk factors, and management of chronic postsurgical pain.
Purpose: The purpose is to highlight the silent epidemic of chronic postsurgical pain and provide some evidence-based guidelines for its management. These worthy objectives are thoroughly met.
Audience: Although the book is intended for chronic pain physicians, anyone who treats such patients, like primary care physicians, would find it very helpful. More importantly, it's a good read for surgeons who often find it hard to believe how prevalent this condition is.
Features: Part one spells out the epidemiology of the problem, while the second part discusses surgical and nonsurgical risk factors. Part three enumerates perioperative strategies that can be used to minimize the risk of developing chronic postsurgical pain. The fourth and final section discusses specific conditions like postmastectomy pain and chronic pain after total knee replacement. The book is well written, the presentation is clear, and the guidelines are evidence based. Each chapter uses the same format, starting with key points, followed by an introduction to the topic, an explanation of the concepts, the pathophysiology of the problem, a conclusion, and references. This is a well researched book, yet concise and to the point.
Assessment: This is the only book wholly dedicated to chronic postsurgical pain. It is an excellent book for chronic pain physicians.
