Overview

Are you ready to get your faith in shape? A 40-Day Spiritual Workout for Catholics is designed to bring about deeper transformation and conversion in your life. Rice challenges his readers to spend forty days developing a habit that will last a lifetime.

Each of the forty days includes a Scripture quote, a quote from a saint or the Catechism of the Catholic Church, a short reflection, thought-provoking questions, and a prayer. Your spiritual workout borrows concepts from physical training, including stretch, cardio, muscle-building, hydration, fat-burning, and cool down.

Rice talks about the importance of prayer for a Christian: Prayer isn't an option for Christians. It's what we do. Imagine meeting someone who says he is a runner but he doesn't like to run. Or a swimmer who doesn't ever go into the water. You'd tell them they aren't who they say they are. Runners run. Swimmers swim. Christians pray. Are you ready to work out? Are you ready to get to know Jesus? Think of Bob Rice as your personal trainer for the next forty days as you grow closer to Christ and strengthen your spiritual muscles.

Bob Rice has a long relationship with youth ministry. As a teen, he attended Young Life Camp, where he established a deep devotion to prayer. He earned an undergraduate degree in theater and, in 1997, a master's in theology and Christian ministry, after which he served as a parish youth minister and became involved with the Life Teen program. Since 2004 he has served as Assistant Professor in the Director of Youth Ministry Concentration at Franciscan University of Steubenville, where he leads worship at the Steubenville Summer Conferences. It was after such a conference in the late 1990s that Rice wrote a 35-day devotional to help teens capitalize on their conference experience via the Internet. In 2012, in conjunction with development of an "app" for the spiritual workout material, Rice updated the original, expanding the period to 40 days. One would guess that most youth would migrate toward electronic devices to participate, but the small-format paperback book is an equally good delivery system for the author's unique approach. He acts as the trainer, laying out a process for strengthening faith and achieving greater intimacy with Jesus. Each day starts with a scripture citation, which Rice terms "hydration," and a reflection consisting of a short quotation. On the eighth day, he adds a "stretch," that is, prayers of blessing and adoration. Day 16 sees the addition of "fat burning" repentance and experience of God's mercy. "Muscle-building" (intercessory prayer) is added on Day 22, and "cardiovascular" (thanksgiving and praise) is added on Day 28. Each session ends with a cool-down recitation of the Our Father and Hail Mary. Between the opening exercises and the cool down, Rice presents a page or so on specific topics such as sin, the meaning of life, the Holy Spirit, and the works of mercy. This would be a great gift for teens, and a useful tool for those who care for and minister to them.
