Children's LiteratureThis title is part of the "Children's Authors" series which follows the author from childhood, through the stages of early career struggles and successes, to later life. Lists of major works are included, and lots of short anecdotes and photographs are used to add interest. Each book has a glossary of new words, references to interesting websites, and an easy-to-use index. The sentences and paragraphs are short, and the prose is straightforward, making it ideal for early readers of nonfiction. In this title, Milne's life is detailed from childhood, where he learned to read by age three, through his time at Cambridge, his service in WWI, and his marriage and family life. His first book, When We Were Very Young, is discussed, and his most famous work, Winnie the Pooh, is given much attention. Readers will learn that Pooh and the other characters in these stories came from the author's son's toy collection. This book would make a wonderful introduction in the classroom to a unit on Winnie the Pooh. It would also be useful in teaching the rudimentary skills of research using a subject sure to be of interest to young readers. 2005, ABDO Publishing Company, Ages 7 to 10.
