Description: This well-organized text includes review questions and answers covering the following topics: general and medical microbiology, microbial genetics, immunology, antibiotics, and virology. The authors have included new material in this edition, covering the areas of molecular biology, diagnostic microbiology, and infection control.
Purpose: The text is designed to be used as a review of the fields of microbiology and immunology for medical students preparing to take the USML step 1 examination.
Audience: The audience is medical students preparing for the USMLE step 1. However, the content is appropriate for any allied health professional studying microbiology or immunology.
Features: The authors of this review text are well respected medical educators. The organization of the text allows the reader to move from one discreet topic to the next. Each chapter begins with a series of USMLE-type questions, followed by a comprehensive explanation of each answer. Also included is a short list of additional reference materials that the student may find of value in preparing for the USMLE.
Assessment: This is a well-organized review text for the USMLE. Although the authors present clear and concise answers to each question, the student may wish to use this book as a companion to a traditional textbook on microbiology and immunology. The strength of this review text lies in its organization and the large number of study questions that the authors have included in this edition. Also, the authors have successfully incorporated into this edition much new and timely information covering the important fields of molecular biology, diagnostic microbiology, and infection control. This is an appropriate and timely study aid and as such would be of great benefit to medical students preparing for the USMLE.
