Description: This is a compilation of presentations from a satellite workshop of the Second Congress of the International Society of Nutrigenetics/Nutrigenomics that was held in Geneva, Switzerland, in October 2008. It includes 10 papers devoted to several topics, including omega-6 and omega 3 fatty acids, dietary cholesterol, and lipid nutrition.
Purpose: The purpose is to discuss the papers that were presented at the satellite workshop and the book delivers on that promise, by providing in-depth information from each of the presentations.
Audience: The book is intended primarily for healthcare providers involved in the care of individuals with, or at risk for, coronary heart disease. This is a high level discussion about these topics that assumes readers have a good knowledge base about the current research. It may be interesting for students to read, but it probably is not appropriate as a textbook. The authors of the papers are respected researchers in the field.
Features: The first few papers provide an in-depth review of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acid ratios. The others focus on blood and dietary cholesterol as well as lipid nutrition. There are very high level explanations of mechanisms of action throughout each paper. In their presentations, the researchers include their own opinions about the current research as well as future research needs. They all provide interesting reviews and give fascinating insight into potentially new research. However, this is not necessarily an all-encompassing view of the current thinking about lipid research.
Assessment: This is an excellent review of lipid nutrition and omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acid research for those who have a strong understanding of the current research. The book summarizes the satellite symposium very well.
