Children's Literature
The United States Olympic Committee has created a series of books just in time for the next Olympics. This one focuses on the often-overlooked art of the decathlon. Go ahead, ask the average kid which ten events are involved. You will almost certainly get a blank stare in return. The guide explains why decathlon winners are probably the best all-around athletes alive; indeed, the current Olympic champ or record-holder is generally described as the world's greatest athlete. The background of the sport is intriguing, and the how-to portion is inspiring. Zarnowski's writing style is upbeat but not overbearing; he encourages young track aficionados to look beyond a single event and challenge themselves to become the greatest athletes they can be. Part of the "Official U.S. Olympic Committee Sports" series. 2001, Griffin, . Ages 9 up. Reviewer: Donna Freedman

Gr 4-8-Two well-crafted titles. Decathlon tells about the equipment, training, scoring, and profiles of previous decathletes. Olympism does an excellent job of covering the history of the Games as well as the events and results of the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Each sport is given a clear, up-to-date, two- to four-page description headed by the official Olympic symbol. The information in both books is accurate, well sequenced, and attractively presented. Unfortunately, the black-and-white photographs are small and not always well reproduced. Nonetheless, these books will be useful in most collections.-Janice C.
