Overview

Petula is a beautiful cow who smells nice, has pretty hair, and makes Ariol tremble when she's around. And even though Ariol's story so far is almost 400 pages long, he still hasn't worked up the courage to tell Petula that he loves her! Instead, he keeps accidentally saying all the wrong things every time she turns around to talk to him in class. Valiant Ariol is finally ready to make his move. Will he soar like Thunder Horse or plummet like, well, like Ariol? With charming artwork and hilarious vignettes, Ariol is the perfect series for anyone who started off life as a kid!

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

“Definitely on the Wimpy Kid bandwagon, but less vicious with the satire and therefore all the more welcome.” —KIRKUS

“Whether Ariol is joining his father for a trip to the ATM, arguing with a friend about sneakers, accompanying his grandmother to the movies, pursuing his great crush, or emulating his favorite superhero, the author dares to depict the exclusionary, argumentative, self-centered ways children can sometimes behave, without giving up an iota of their charm.” —BOOKLIST

“I dare you to put it down once you start, and you'll agree, Ariol is the new kid in town for reluctant readers.” —KID LIT REVIEWS

Gr 3–6—Ariol loves Petula because she smells good and she is a beautiful cow. However, Ariol, a little donkey, has a hard time telling her this. Instead, he dreams about what he would say to her if he could, hangs out with his friends, gets advice from his parents, and has adventures. Silly situations and memorable characters make for an enjoyable, quick read. The easy-to-follow panels and colors that seem to pop from the pages make this graphic novel particularly pleasing. With crisp lines and forgiving backgrounds that blend in perfectly, this work will aesthetically delight middle graders. The many short unconnected adventures in this series entry will assure readers that the volumes don't have to be read in order. A great choice for libraries where Lincoln Peirce's "Big Nate" (HarperCollins) is enjoyed and where kids crave more after finishing Jennifer Holm's "Babymouse" or "Squish" (Random).—Mariela Siegert, Westfield Middle School, Bloomingdale, IL

Meet the Author

EMMANUEL GUIBERT has written a great many graphic novels for readers young and old, among them the Sardine in Outer Space series, The Professor's Daughter with Joann Sfar, and Alan's War: The Memories of G.I. Alan Cope. Another of Guibert's recent works is The Photographer. Showered with awards, it relates a Doctors Without Borders mission in 1980s Afghanistan through the eyes of a great reporter. Guibert lives in Paris with his wife and daughter.

Originating from Burgundy (as do the best snails), MARC BOUTAVANT now lives and works in Paris. His work springs from a wry observation of life and the interaction of his friends and children. Their quirks of personality, mannerisms and reactions to situations are transposed onto his characters.
