Overview

It's easy to take potshots at actors turned musicians, since it often seems like the actors are taking advantage of their celebrity by turning into recording stars. This ignores two facts: first, often these actors have been playing music for as long as they've been acting; and second, who's to say that these critics, if put in the same position, wouldn't take advantage of their celebrity to pursue their dream projects? In the case of 30 Seconds to Mars, the metallic post-grunge quartet led by Jared Leto (after all these years, still best-known as Jordan Catalano on the alt rock-era TV series My So-Called Life, although he has been excellent in Darren Aronofsky's Requiem for a Dream and David Fincher's Fight Club and Panic Room, as well), these actor-turned-musician arguments don't really matter since, by any measure, the band is quite awful. A melange of U2 atmospherics, grunge angst, gothic brooding, and metal guitars, the band floats out of time, inspired heavily by '90s alt rock but too clean, heavy, and facile to truly be part of that tradition, yet too indebted to the past to sound like part of the 2000s, either. Their second album, 2005's A Beautiful Lie -- whose title is uncomfortably close to Nine Inch Nails' "Terrible Lie" (and is most likely not borrowed from the Amazing Rhythm Aces' 1975 song of the same name, either) -- is a little tighter and more streamlined than their eponymous 2002 debut, but the basic angst-ridden rock remains the same. Leto isn't a terrible singer -- a little too breathy at times and a little too inclined to dive into a full-throated scream, but not terrible -- and the bandmembers are capable enough at shifting from tense quiet verses to piledriving, heavy choruses, but they borrow the worst habits from all their favorite groups, and then assemble them in insufferably earnest fashion, playing clichés as if they were revelations. It's a bleak yet hammy collection of self-absorbed gloom-rock, a record where an allusion to the title of the Cure's "Just Like Heaven" is treated as something soul-searching and profound (of course, it does hurt that A Beautiful Lie is being released just a month before "Just Like Heaven" is being borrowed for the title of a Reese Witherspoon romantic comedy). It's clear that Leto and the rest of 30 Seconds to Mars really mean it, man -- this is as earnest as an emo record gets.

30 Seconds to Mars came back with a strong sophomore album, with tracks that spanned a wider variety of sounds than their first CD. While fans are sure to eat this one up, as they are sure to have done so with the self titled cd, the new comer to the group may have a greater appreciation for the larger spectrum of melodies and vocals. While the first CD enjoyed a solid sound throughout the entire CD, a technological rock hybrid, the pace slows down for most songs on A beautiful Lie, while still keeping the energy and excitement. Leto's lyrics are as the only thing that came as a large change of pace. They went from a erray of revolutionary and rebellious words, and some that sounded from out of this world, to more toned down and understandable concepts. This makes the band more appealing to the newcomer, and it's a slight change of pace, it does nothing to interrupt the satisfaction of the experience. From a diehard fan, I give this my full recoomendation and greatly encourage any fan to see 30 Seconds to Mars live. They are incredible.

I was skeptical upon first listen of the album. I was a big fan of the first CD, and after hearing "Attack", I was afraid that the band had gone emo. I received the CD in the mail 2 days after it's release. I put the CD in, played it through, and was almost disappointed. After a couple of days passed, I put the CD back in my player, making sure to forget that they had a first album. After that listen, I kept the CD in my player for 3 weeks straight. I just recently took it out because I'm making myself listen to other music. This is a great album, filled with all kinds of emotions and something you don't find too often nowadays - Hope. This is a must buy for any fan of 30 Seconds to Mars and for anyone looking for good music.

30 Seconds 2nd album is amazing! For some reason I didn't pay attention the first time around, but now I've gone back and bought their last album as well. The title track is gorgeous and The Kill and Fantasy round out 3 possible single to follow Attack. The band is mesmerizing live and Jared Leto is the real deal so don't let his acting career misguide you into thinking he's just playing at rock. I can't stop playing A Beautiful Lie and their debut too. 30 Seconds to Mars sounds like nothing else out there right now

This is my favorite CD out of my whole collection! It is totally different from the first one but I love this one more! I was a little thrown off when I first heard 'Attack' but then I listened to 'A Beautiful Lie' and I was sold! I love the lyrics and melodies the band has put together for this album. You really have some insight onto what's going on in their heads. I recommend this CD to all my friends and am slowly making a Mars Army out of them! This is an absolute must have if you're a 30 Seconds to Mars fan!

The new 30 Seconds To Mars CD (A Beautiful Lie)is one the greatest CD's that I have ever heard! They are so original, they have their own sound, and their music is so addicting. I have listened to that CD at least once everyday and I just like it more and more. Shannon Leto is one of the greatest drummers ever! He definitely is a master drummer that is very original, creative, and has done some things with his drumming that I have never heard before.

it wasn't as good as their first cd. Still worth it though for fans of the band.

If you loved their old album, you may not be quite as in love with this, cuz it's not the EXACT same sound. But I was deffinately in love with the old one, and Im deffinately in love with this one. Yes, they are different, but A Beautiful Lie is awesome!! It made my ears bleed, just like 30STM promised it would!!! If you arent sure if you wanna buy this one cuz it 'doesnt sound like the old one' dont even think about it that way!!! This album is just as unique, just as effective as the old one!!! Yeah, there is change, but its a good change...listen and see!!! I LOVED IT!!!

I love Jared Leto and the first time I heard 30 Seconds to Mars I didn't know he was the singer and I was shocked when I found out it was him.So I didn't like 30 Seconds to Mars because I like him(a lot of people like the band because of Jared been an actor).Their first CD was amazing.I was in love with the song "Buddah for Mary". I listen to that song over and over and I still love it. When I heard the single "Attack" I could heard that Jared's voice was improved and the only two other musicians that have an amazing scream were Kurt Cobain and Jim Morrison. When I heard his scream it was like Jim and Kurt had become one person and that was Jared.I haven't stop listening to A Beautiful Lie . I bougth the CD when I went to the X96 Show.Their performance was brilliant and you could see that 30 Seconds to Mars appreciates their fans.I also meet Jared and the guys and let me tell toy that Jared is so beautiful and a nice guy so are the band members.Anyone that is tried of music that blows has to buy this CD because it has emotions. The songs together are a great book and also alone they have their owm uniqueness and color.

So 30 seconds to mars maybe a band that happens to have an actor as the frontman but this frontman can front a band like this. the music on a beautiful life is pure rock. the raw and inspiring vocals are not something you would expect from someone known by many a 20something girl as JORDAN CATALANO. Although we always knew he had the brooding rockstar look back then. i doubt any of us would have thought he had the musical chops to put out an album of this quality. Rock is back with a vengence and 30 seconds to mars is the proof. the true test of a cds quality is whether or not you can listen to the whole thing without skipping. buy this album and you will see. from 1-12 there isnt a bad song on it.

I was utterly amazed with this CD. I've seen Jared Leto in movies and never really paid attention and then suddenly a friend recommended this band to me and said I needed to have a listen. I did and now I have the CD. I can't get enough of these guys. This CD has been in my player non - stop. They are all very talented and if you love good music, this is the new band for you.

30 Seconds To Mars are the BEST! My favorite band ever! You should listen to "Attack", "A Beautiful Lie", "The Kill", and "From Yesterday".

"A Beautiful Lie" is a spectacular rock album that surprisingly enough sounds nothing like their first (much to the disappointment of fans that expect bands to sound the same on every CD!). Yes, they have embraced a more mainstream rock sound, not too different from bands like The Used, but they haven't lost that captivating ambience that won my heart 3 years ago. "A Beautiful Lie" is a journey through the heart, mind, and soul of 4 guys that know how to touch people through music. It is creatively formed, explores new sounds, and most importantly, is an album they truly believe in. Packed with invigorating guitar/bass, energetic drums, and vocals so emotional you can feel it, you are sure to listen to the whole album without skipping a song. Not that he needed any improvement but Jared's vocals are definitely at their best - the passion in his voice is phenomenal as he turns each song into a work of art. Shannon, Matt, and Tomo all play with the strength and confidence of a band that has been around forever....they are purely magnetic. Lyrically they are still going strong as well although they seemed to have traded in their celestial references for those that question faith and capture bitter breakups. All in all, this is an album that is going to be in my CD player for a very long time!

Finding a band that is willing to leave the confines of their “signature“ sound to seek a more emotional fulfillment is rare. Rather than lay their hearts bare, many bands would rather take the safe route. 30 Seconds To Mars manages to keep the base of their sound intact as they venture into deeper territory. This is a refreshing escape from the same radio-friendly sound that passes as artistry. The result is an escalating journey through trials and tribulations that well exhibits the growth of one of the best bands in modern rock.

This album is one of the best I have had the opprotunity to listen to. Each song paints a raw glimpse into the lives of these itinerant musicans. The songs have depth and meaning in an age where that seems to be a waning trend. Sonically it harkens back to everything that was good about the 80s and 90s rock universe. There are definite influences that ring through U2s 'The Edge', Robert Smith's swelling guitar sounds of 'The Cure', etc. However, it maintains that hard rock edge! Listen to track number 11 and you will understand exactly what I mean by that statement. For me the highlight of the album was the suprise of hearing the first few notes of Bjork's Hunter. They do a fabulous rendition of this song and stylistically retain all the emotion and raw passion of the original. In summation this album is not so much about being spaced out - but just living in the space of life (passion, joy, disillusionment, etc.) and the clarity that comes with it.

This band is simply wonderful. The vocals of Jared Ledo and the hard sound of his crew brings clarity to a muddied music genre. Songs like "Attack" and "Beautiful Lie" can be listened to multiple times. A bonus is the cinematic and movie-like videos the band continues to release.
