Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Elyse Larson founded the Beautiful Mess lifestyle blog in 2007 and since 2010, she and her co-owner/editor sister Emma Chapman have making it a much bigger and notable mess. In their second book collaboration (the popular A Beautiful Mess Photo Idea Book was their first), these high-spirited siblings guide you on a room-by-room guide to personalizing your own living abode. As their online faithful already know, this resourceful pair walks the extra mile to conjure up new ideas for decorating and enhancing spots that need brightening in your home. A trade paperback and NOOK Book original treasure.

In the cover photo, the authors, two sisters who produce A Beautiful Mess blog, lounge on turquoise couches, a white shag rug on the floor; one is typing on the laptop while the other fluffs a polka-dotted pillow. Whether or not the reader likes the aesthetic of crafty meets hipster chic, there will be a desire to be friends with the author-hosts so as to be invited to their next party for a "Birthday Cake Martini." The book mostly consists of beautiful, if standard, porn-with-pillow-shams photography (lots of light filtering through filmy window coverings), but the authors do show a bit of decorating daring, including a black living room accent wall that actually looks good. Every few pages, the sisters offer a craft idea, which range from the unoriginal, such as creating a kids art gallery wall using wire and clothespins, to the bizarre, in which white electrical tape is employed to give style to a black refrigerator. In the introduction, the authors instruct readers to identify what features stand out in "favorite spaces" of all kinds, to make lists of how rooms might be used unconventionally (playing cards in a dining room), and to do some soul searching ("Make a list of 100 things about YOU.") The idea is to make home an expression of one's personality, a skill that the authors have clearly mastered. (Aug.)

I personally loved every page of this book. I am a fan of the blog, yes, but I don't typically like blog books, because they'll just copy and paste the content. I think I recognized maybe one project as something I saw on the blog? Anyway, I just loved it.

It is definitely the same style as their blog, in that it's very inspiration-focused. Maybe that doesn't make any sense, but what I mean is it's all about ideas. Things I just didn't realize were so simple and would look amazing! Either way, this booking is stepping up my decor game like crazy!!

    Love it!

So after the cookbook review I thought I would try my hand at this wonderful home decorating/D.I.Y book by the genius creators of the
blog, A Beautiful Mess, Elsie Larson and Emma Chapman.

On their blog Elsie and Emma share tons of wonderful tips, techniques, projects and recipes to their millions of readers showing us how
important lifestyle blogs are to our everyday life. I know personally I love the lifestyle/d.i.y. blogs they provide wonderful things, I even got
a recipe to make my own laundry detergent from one that I still use years later.

But on to the books which does not have a recipe to make your own laundry detergent, lol! However, it includes wonderful projects and
tips by room to make your home unique, to put your own personal style stamp on it. Most of the projects are relatively easy and low-cost
which makes this book even better because not only does it have these great projects and ideas but you can make them work just about
around any budget! Elsie and Emma also show us how to throw some parties.

    Disappointing!

Although I really enjoy their blog, this book is a huge disappointment. I just read the entire book in 30 minutes and I can't think of a single project that I'm interested in duplicating. Save your money and just spend 30 minutes looking through projects on their inspiring blog. The projects there are much more sophisicated (and often need more than the 3 step juvenile instructions like those found here). This book may be helpful for preschool craft teachers. Did I mention my disappointment?

I've been following the blog A Beautiful Mess for awhile now.

I've been following the blog A Beautiful Mess for awhile now. From back when it was small, just Elsie and Emma, to the huge thing it has become, with an entire team. I've enjoyed watching them grow and expand. And now, the girls have expanded into... books. While I wasn't super interested in their photography book, since my favorite part of their blog is the DIY's, I was really interested in this one.

I loved the inside look this gave us into their homes and personalities. While we do see a lot of that on the blog as well, I loved seeing all that pictures and inspiration. I've already gone through and thought about which projects I want to attempt myself.

This is the perfect inspiration book. It's more than just a book of how-to's. The girls have infused it with their personalities, and it's also just a lot of fun. I also love that all of the projects are in one place, for easy reference.

Whether you are decorating a new space, getting bored of an old one, or whatever reason you may just need some inspiration, this is the perfect book that will help and guide you, while still being fun to read. I would highly recommend it.

I was hoping for much more. I feel like I could go to their website to get most of these ideas or even Pinterest. It's not a book I'd recommend to purchase or spend money on. Maybe check it out at your local library for free.
