Barnes & Noble - Andrew Velez
James Horner's Academy Award-, Grammy-, and Golden Globe-winning score for Titanic became the top-selling film score of all time, but the composer, neither daunted or overshadowed by that success, continues to show his stylistic diversity, as he has repeatedly in the past with his work on Braveheart and Enemy at the Gates. His latest is an elegantly complex score complementing the drama of a brilliant, schizophrenic mathematician portrayed by Russell Crowe recruited by the U.S. government to crack Soviet codes. His latest is an elegantly complex score complementing the drama of a brilliant, schizophrenic mathematician portrayed by Russell Crowe recruited by the U.S. government to crack Soviet codes. For a thriller segment, "The Car Chase," a solitary, plinking piano and wordless vocalizing against an ominously swelling orchestra embody the sound of danger. The main character's downward spiral into madness is implicit in "Alicia Discovers Nash's Dark World," and is eloquently expressed by a chorus of swirling violins and muted piano chords. To illustrate the romantic and optimistic aspect of the story on "The Prize of One's Life," a harp cascades luminously, only to be capped by the otherworldly purity of Charlotte Church's soprano in "All Love Can Be" lyrics by Will Jennings. Horner's masterful score, coupled with Crowe's compelling performance, show that A Beautiful Mind would indeed be a terrible thing to waste.

    Tugs at your heart

Although I am a fan of many of Horner's soundtracks, I am especially delighted by this compilation from "A Beautiful Mind." The tracks all blend perfectly with each other and there is a continuously rolling feel to the CD that takes your heart from playful harp and piano touches to powerful orchestrated and string sections. His use of poignant dissonance is really what is key to the success of this music, and he employs it masterfully.

    A beautiful and inspiring score

"Kaleidoscope of Mathematics" - hatingly beautiful theme. Horner really surpassed himself with this score. He masterfully used Charlotte Church's angelic voice. This is a must.

James Horner chooses the ''BEST'' vocal performer for this soundtrack!!!!!!!!!

This album is the BEST album that ever was made and James Horner's idea to select the magical voice of CHARLOTTE CHURCH as the person who performs all the vocals was a TOTALLY magnificent one cause I am a ''DIE-HARD'' fan of her music!!!!!!!!! When CHARLOTTE sings ''All Love Can Be'', I was in TOTAL awe and I kept sighing from the softness, magic, and purity of her angelic voice!!!!! The first track ''A Kaleidoscope of Mathematics'', is the opening of the mvie where the title is showing and CHARLOTTE'S voice is mixed in with the background music-it was a PERFECT introduction to the movie and soundtrack!!!!!!!! ''Playing a Game of ''GO'', Horner uses her voice to portray the stuff that's going around in Nash's head. On ''Cracking the Russian Codes'', James uses CHURCH'S voice to produce a kind of haunting feeling to that part and she does portray that in her voice, extremely well!!!!!!! At the ''closing credits'' part, CHARLOTTE sings at the very end of it, until her voice gets softer and softer, until the soundtrack's over!!!!!!! This is a FANTASTIC album for every C.C fan out there, even though some of the songs don't use her voice and also for fans, who love this movie!!!!!!!!! This album richly deserves 5 stars for James Horner's choice of using C.C'S voice as the background music and the ''closing credits'' music and for his great job on this album, overall!!!!!!!!! WOW!!!!!

    Breath taking

I love this soundtrack!!! It is so gorgeous, and emotional. Parts of it are very ligh hearted, others are sad and emotional, others are simply spellbinding. Charlotte Church is a very nice touch to the CD, her voice is so beautiful. My sibling hates music, but this soundtrack is the only thing that he listens to and enjoys. You don't have to like the movie to enjoy the soundtrack. It is deffinately recommended. You will be swept away by the beauty, and by Charlottes voice. She is amazing!!!
