I read this book and was struck by how innocent and simple the world was then. In seems impossible that a hitch hiker could make it across the Atlantic and Europe for under $200 and hear the frank opinions of so many people of different nationalities. I didn't realize that the universal opinion across Europe was that war was on the horizon. But in spite of that, people of all the nations of Europe were generally friendly to Americans and hospitable. It also surprised me that so few in Germany appeared to disagree openly with Hitler. The personal stories of so many different individuals was also fascinating bringing to life the time before the curtain of WW2 was pulled on time.
Fascinating!
