First Chapter

It has been said, "Life is but a journey from the cradle to the grave." While this saying may not be overly optimistic, nevertheless it is true. Yet, while the starting and ending points of each of our life's journeys are the same, the paths that we take and the obstacles that we must overcome are definitely not.

We obviously don't all have the same natural abilities or the same opportunities in our lives. Still, that does not change the fact that the quality of our lives, and ultimately our own destiny, is determined mainly by our own actions and decisions. Each and every one of us has the natural ability to live a joy filled and amazingly rewarding life. Unfortunately, we don't always have enough faith in ourselves, or in God, to make the right decisions needed to live the good life. Consequently, we don't always follow the best path for ourselves.

Assuming that you are not mentally handicapped (note, I didn't say physically), the fact remains that by and large you are in control of your life's journey whether you like it or not. The day-to-day decisions that you make, be they good or bad decisions, will determine the path that you take in your life's journey. In the end, these same decisions will determine your final destiny as well.

The path you take really is up to you. You can either embrace this reality or you can take the "wait and see" approach and hope that your life will somehow improve all by itself.

If up until now you've taken the "wait and see" approach, take some time to think about your current life. How have things worked out for you so far? My guess is, probably not as well as you would have liked them to.

Keep in mind; if you don't make conscious decisions to change your life, the months and years will gradually slip by anyway. Time waits for no one! A week...a year...even ten years might pass without any real significant changes in the quality of your life.

Unfortunately, without these changes, the same aspects of your life that you're unhappy with now will most likely be the same ten weeks, ten months or even ten years from now. If you have an alcohol or substance abuse problem, more than likely things will get worse - possibly, much worse.

Even if you decide not to make any decisions to improve the quality of your life, you've still made a decision that will undoubtedly alter the path that you take in life.

A better life is not a destination, but rather a continuous journey!
