Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
A certified teacher, Bond has filled her book with activities gained through her own experiences. Seventeen complete units can be used to teach children of ages four through seven. The focus is on great Americans such as Marian Anderson, Thurgood Marshall, Ralph Bunch, George Washington Carver and many others. Each unit contains biographical information, songs, stories, worksheets, patterns, recommended additional reading, and sketches of finished projects. For example, in the unit on Shirley Chisholm, students learn that she was the first black woman in Congress. To understand the election process children hold an election to select a class mascot. They discuss what a candidate is and how the candidate campaigns to be selected as the winner. The children create a ballot box, prepare ballots and vote. Reading is not required because the children draw the animal of their choice on the paper ballot. The ballots are then tabulated. For older children the activity can become more involved, with speeches, campaign materials, debates, etc.
