Overview

Ken Wilson-Max teamed up with his wife, illustrator Manya Stojic, to create this unique and imaginative interactive alphabet book with fun lift-up-flap envelopes and a large pull-out alphabet poster.

A BOOK OF LETTERS offers young readers a new approach to learning the alphabet. When Abigail Anderson receives an "A" in a letter from a friend, she adds a "B" and passes the letter to Bunny Bernstein. Bunny sends a "C" to Christopher Clark, and so begins the alphabet chain letter! As the story progresses, the letter is passed from one child to another, whose names all correspond to the next letter of the alphabet. The large 10x10 format allows for big, bold illustrations and the lift-up-flaps enable small fingers to "open" the "envelopes" inside, creating an interactive element that parents and children will enjoy. The last spread contains a real envelope with a large fold-out alphabet poster inside for kids to hang up and refer to whenever they need help remembering their ABCs!

Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Dear Abby, This is for you from me. It's an A, the first letter of the ABC. Pass it on! Twenty-six links in the chain letter later, Zuzu, the originator, gets what she hoped for in A Book of Letters by Ken Wilson-Max, illus. by Manya Stojic. Lift-the-flap envelopes appear amid Stojic's colorfully textured illustrations. A pull-out alphabet poster (featuring the first letters of all the pen pals' names) appears in an envelope on the last page. (Apr.) Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Children's Literature
This bright orange 10 inch by 10 inch book presents a chain of letters (mail) between 26 different people whose names begin with 26 different letters (alphabet). Abigail Anderson receives a note from an unidentified friend that says, "Dear Abby, This is for you from me. It's an A, the first letter of the ABC. Pass it on! Send this letter on to someone new!" So Abby sends Bunny Bernstein a similar latter and so on, until the final page wherein Zuzu pulls a poster out of an envelope that illustrates all the letters and all the names. The little notes take slightly different forms, such as Valentines and notes on yellow sheets with tear out letters from printed materials; some letters are hidden behind envelope flaps and some are written on cards; some go to other countries and one travels between siblings; and some almost rhyme, but underneath it all there is something missing. The book has no style, no punch. It just limps to the end of the alphabet. 2002, Scholastic/Cartwheel Books, $14.95. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Eleanor Heldrich
