Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
The Barnes & Noble Review
Through a wash of watercolor illustrations that brim with character, Jane Dyer introduces the youngest of readers to poems, rhymes, and lullabies. Based on her dazzling Animal Crackers anthology, this beautiful box set features board book editions of her oft-praised books, Animal Crackers: Nursery Rhymes and Animal Crackers: Bedtime, plus a new collection, Animal Crackers: Animal Friends.

Dyer hits the mark as she presents nursery rhymes for little ones, using short verse and exquisite paintings of these unforgettable classics. "Little Bo-Peep," "Pat-a-Cake," and "Hey, Diddle Diddle" are all included in this superior blend.

In Bedtime, we are treated to a variety of rhymes and lullabies from around the world, from "Wee Willie Winkie" to Tennyson's "Sweet and Low." Dyer manages to tie them all together, from modern poetry to the traditional, with her gorgeous illustrations.

In the latest collection, Animal Friends, Dyer celebrates rhymes and poems of the animal kingdom. From "Cock-a-Doodle-Doo" to the Brazilian lullaby "Cradle Song of the Elephants," babies will get their first look at animals -- perhaps even a napping cow in the sky and seven blackbirds in a tree.

This delightful set comes encased in a sturdy cardboard box that includes a pale-blue ribbon handle, perfect for carrying. Babies will of course love the board book format. For while they are drooling over the cover and smiling at the gorgeous pages, we are sure they are all becoming potential petite poets. (Amy Barkat)

Publishers Weekly
Another handy carrying case, with a blue satin handle, contains A Box of Animal Crackers: Three Board Books by Jane Dyer. The three hand-size volumes Animal Crackers: Bedtime; Animal Crackers: Nursery Rhymes; and Animal Crackers: Animal Friends are excerpted from her Animal Crackers: A Delectable Collection of Pictures, Poems and Lullabies for the Very Young, which PW said, in a starred review, has "the power to entice youngest children to cherish the richness and diversity of both language and art." Children's Literature
In this box with a blue ribbon, there are three delightful board books illustrated by Jane Dyer. The first, Animal Crackers: Animal Friends, is a collection of poems from some well-known poets (William Carlos Williams, Nancy Willard and Charlotte Pomerantz). Many others are poems that are not attributes to any author, but have made their way through generations. The second, Animal Crackers: Bedtime, is also filled with poems and rhymes that should soothe the little ones at bedtime or naptime. There are the classics—"Wee Willie Winkie," "Wynken, Blynken, and Nod," along with newer poems by Jane Yolen, Clyde Watson and Thomas Decker. The third book in the set, Animal Crackers: Nursery Rhymes contains, for the most part, very familiar poems. In addition to the pure enjoyment of the rhythm and rhyme, some teach counting, days of the week, and encourage hand actions or joining in the refrain. What really makes these books are the watercolors—filled with warmth, humor and things that will delight little ones.
