Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Keri Collins Lewis
The students at Niceville Elementary School have a big problem. Instead of having fun on the playground, several of their students are having trouble with other kids being mean to them. Whether it is refusing to let someone play a group game or pushing kids as they go down the slide, bullies make recess scary. This informative title in the "A Bully-Free World" series addresses different forms of bullying through fictional characters of various ethnicities in a playground setting. Author Hall briefly explains that bullies are motivated by a desire to feel more powerful than someone else. She then sets up different scenarios to show verbal, physical, and social bullying. In each case, Hall asks readers what they think the child being bullied should do before suggesting solutions. In each scenario, Hall encourages peers to be "upstanders," people who stand up for those being bullied. Ostrom's illustrations include speech bubbles that model potential responses to bullies, including identifying the behavior as mean and refusing to play with the bully. She also defines the difference between reporting dangerous behavior and tattling. The book includes a quiz with thought-provoking questions intended to identify bullying behaviors, followed by strategies for self-improvement. Hall also encourages parents, caregivers and teachers to serve as role models, since children often learn bullying behaviors from the significant adults in their lives. The straightforward nature of this book, with its practical examples of bullying behaviors and appropriate responses, is well-suited to younger audiences or special needs students who need concrete and clear instruction on how to deal with bullies.
