Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Sicilian-born Sciascia (1921?89) was a respected journalist before turning his hand to literature and becoming one of the best-known writers of what is known as Italy's postwar generation. To many, he is a cult figure because he combined political activism with a sharp eye to the corruption of power, and his being Sicilian gave him an even more acute awareness of the minutiae of everyday abuses and their connection to larger crimes. When a small-town pharmacist is murdered, shy but persistent schoolmaster Laurana leads a private investigation. A series of fortuitous discoveries in the Sicilian capital draw Laurana closer to the motives behind the murder, but as she pries too closely into the matter, she hastens her own death. Sciascia is brilliant at capturing the idiosyncrasies and vices of a closely knit society, with its strict dynamics and rules. Salmeron's translation feels true to the austere language of the original, which was published in 1068. A tautly written mystery; recommended for public and academic libraries.—Catherine Rendón, Savannah, GA
