A Cappella

Barnes & Noble - Lisa Zhito
Unadorned by instrumental accompaniment, the four-part harmonies of the Gaither Vocal Band (Bill Gaither, Guy Penrod, David Phelps, and Russ Taff) shine in their full glory on these 12 recordings. It's their first-ever a cappella project, and it's about time: In the hands -- well, voices, of pros like these, the songs come to their full emotional and spiritual fruition -- instrumentation would be beside the point. "Sing a Song/ I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing" banishes all memory of that old Coca-Cola commercial, though the "Sing a Song" part is a tad treacly; indeed, the material covered here blends spiritual, inspirational, and patriotic themes, and the Gaithers resonate most powerfully on the spiritual material. Closing with the eloquent prayer of "Gentle Shepherd," the Gaither Vocal Band proves that a true musical experience doesn't need synthesizers, ProTools, or even instruments to be enjoyable.
