Barnes & Noble
Leela James may be small in stature, but she sings with a demonstrative grit reminiscent of Mavis Staples and Gladys Knight. More important, she doesn't merely mimic these inspirations; she follows them in learning from the past and applying it to the present. This approach enables her to build upon tradition, rather than simply restating it. Kanye West, Raphael Saadiq, Wyclef Jean, James Poyser, and even James Mtume get in on the action, giving James all the support she could've dreamed of when conceiving the album. There's plenty of thematic range here: blue lights in the basement, tears on the pillow, sweat on the dance floor, sun showers on the porch. Expect great things from her

This is a true soul album. Bravo Ms James for having the guts to put the thongs away and sing.

    Good Stuff!

I love this album. When I first heard the song on the videos I knew I had to go and get it so I did and I do not regret this soulful singer.Hope she's working on her next album cause I want to hear more.

    The Best Album of 2005

I buy a lot of music, and this is the best purchase I made in 2005 (sorry Kanye). I love this album. It is a great break from the monotony of the radio. Its soulful without being abstract (like many neo-soul albums). Good music, great vocal, and quality songs. A sophomore project is going to be interesting because this album will be very hard to top. She has an "Anthony Hamilton" feel, so if like him, you will LOVE Leela James.

    Wonderful Wonderful Wonderful!

I love this CD it is the best one that I have purchased in a long time! Her voice is very naturally soulful.. It doesn't sound like she is straining her voice or trying to hard. She sings all of the sounds passionately.

    Leela found the music!

I love this album. For such a little thing, she has a big voice! My favorites are Good Time, Been a Long Time, and the covers of A Change is Gonna Come and Don't Speak. The whole CD is wonderful!

Chicken soup for the true music lover's soul!!!!

Ms. James is just want the doctor ordered. Amongst a sea of mediocre, radio-ready, cookie cutter artist, there comes a true artist deserving of the title. Ms. James provides a much needed breath of fresh air to the industry. Leela blends the old with the new, the salty with the sweet, and the fresh with the gritty. Her voice is reminiscent of Tina Turner, Mavis Staples, and Gladys Knight, but she has a resonance all her very own. Brava, Leela. Excellent work!!! The universe thanks you for the positive, beautiful energy...
