Overview

This truly wide-ranging selection of Chanukah-inspired songs draws from some of the best Jewish music of recent vintage. There's indeed something for everyone: alternative rock (The Leevees and Barenaked Ladies), big band swing (Kenny Ellis), Sephardic folk songs (Judy Frankel and Alisa Fineman), choral melodies (Sue Fink's Angel City Chorale), even a nugget from everyone's favorite philosemite, Woody Guthrie. And anyone interested in the somewhat drippy Judaic folksongs familiar from summer camp will find that, too. The mood runs the gamut, from the joy of gift-giving (and receiving) among cozy flames and food to reverent retellings of the martial story of Judah Maccabee - Peter Himmelman and David Broza are especially true to the Torah imperative to "light up the world" with righteous actions, a poignant reminder during a season of rampant consumerism. Thoughtfully complete with contact information for many of the artists, this Chanukah Celebration promises to be just the beginning of an engagement with Jewish song for the whole family.

Originally I was looking for Chanukah CD's for my Jewish friends, but then I stumbled on this one, listened to it and loved it. I bought one for me and several others for friends. Basically, it rocks. How can you go wrong with Barenaked Ladies, The Leevees and the legendary Woody Guthrie. besides those artists, I love the Beatniks song...never heard of them, but I'm a fan now. Just a fantastic compilation!

This CD is one of the best Hanukkah CD's I've listened to!  It has every genre of music... from jazz to folk...serious to comedy...something for everyone!  Brush up on your Spanish and refresh your Yiddish...all on one CD!  I can't wait to take it out every year..

I love the song "One". The arrangement and the blending of the voices are beautiful. This song is not just a Chanukah song, but has a universal message of good tidings.

I bought this on a whim and it is really outstanding. Great variety, great messages, especially the choral number One. A great gift for all my friends and family.

Found this while surfing for Chanukah music and it is fantastic. The range is great and there really is something for everyone. Most notable for me was the piece by The Angel City Chorale ("One"). Beauty is simplicity and the message of this song brought a little tear to my eye. Buy this album!!

GREAT compilation of Chanukah songs! I bought it for Marc Cohn's version of "Ma'oz Tsur," but there's so much more great music. The choral piece ("One") is absolutely gorgeous, and I can't get the Woody Guthrie "Hanukkah Dance" out of my head.
