Overview

No holiday season would be complete without watching Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Snoopy, and the rest of the Peanuts gang give a forgotten tree a little love, recite the Christmas story, and sing "Silent Night."

For nearly fifty years, since first airing in December 1965, A Charlie Brown Christmas has been one of America's most beloved television shows and is a holiday television staple. Every year millions of fans tune in to the Emmy-winning Christmas special featuring Vince Guaraldi's iconic jazz score and Charles Schulz's Peanuts characters as they remind Charlie Brown, and all of us, of the true meaning of Christmas.

A Charlie Brown Christmas: The Making of a Tradition is a lushly illustrated tribute to the beloved television classic that takes readers behind-the-scenes of the Peanuts holiday special. It includes the script of A Charlie Brown Christmas, more than two hundred full-color pieces of original animation art, Vince Guaraldi's original score and publication notes for the songs "Christmas Time is Here" and "Linus and Lucy," and a look at the making of the feature from producer Lee Mendelson and original animator, the late Bill Melendez. The two share their personal memories and charming reminiscences on the Christmas special and reflect on their three decades of working with Peanuts creator, Charles M. Schulz.

A Charlie Brown Christmas: The Making of a Tradition is a delightful and fitting salute to the holiday special that never fails to deepen your love of Christmas, touch your heart, and give you hope.

Surrounded by other kids with extremely commercial ideas about Christmas, Charlie Brown struggles to understand the true spirit of the holiday.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
A Charlie Brown Christmas first aired in 1965, and for many of us Christmas just wouldn't be the same without this classic tale of a boy's search for the true meaning of Christmas. A beautifully illustrated volume celebrating this beloved holiday TV classic, A Charlie Brown Christmas: The Making of a Tradition, will be treasured by Peanuts fans of all ages.
Children's Literature
Rather than using a book to generate a movie, A Charlie Brown Christmas puts the dialogue of a television special right on the printed page along with all of our favorite Peanuts characters. The story is familiar and worthy of repeating season after season. Charlie Brown is dejected by all the "greedy buying and selling that had become Christmas" but is unable to pull together his friends for a peaceful and successful performance of their holiday play. His efforts to bring just the right Christmas tree to the stage leave him even more dejected when the one tiny tree he finds falls to the ground with the weight of a single ornament. "Everything I touch gets ruined!" he moans. But spurred by the sweet innocence of Linus, the others decorate the little tree until it becomes a beautiful centerpiece for the season. Each Peanuts character in the story provides a "teachable moment"¾Charlie Brown's idealism, Sally's youthful selfishness, Lucy's arrogance, Linus' thoughtful caring. It is a story of simplicity, sincerity and friendship that reminds readers of the essence of the Christmas holiday with humor and page after page of well-loved artwork. 2001, Little Simon, $5.99. Ages 4 up. Reviewer: Karen Leggett

Fascinating celebration of an American classic

Penned by producer Lee Mendelson and with an introduction by [recently deceased] animator Bill Melendez, this book tells the story of how one of the all-time classic Christmas television specials came to be. Production was a truly 'seat of your pants' affair, and up until the ratings came in, CBS was genuinely afraid they had a dud on their hands. Instead, they got an instant classic that continues to be must-see holiday fare for millions of families today, which through the simplicity and timelessness of its characters and story, remains as relevant today as it was in 1965.

    One of a Kind

'A charlie Brown Christmas,' one of the great classics of all time. This book brings back so many good childhood memories. All of Charles Schulz's books have good moral values. This story especiallyy hits home for me. It reminds me of the way Christmas's used to be. Whenever I read this story it brings me back to the good ole days of being a kid. I think every family should own a copy of the greatest Christmas story ever written.
