Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Grace-a brief prayer of thanks usually said at mealtime-is often among the first prayers that children learn. A Child's Book of Graces by Lois Rock, illus. by Alison Jay, collects child-friendly blessings that will be welcomed at many a family table, e.g. "Morning is here,/ The table is spread,/ Thanks be to God,/ Who gives us bread." Children's Literature - Carol Ann Lloyd-Stanger
This small book offers twenty-four graces that children can learn and recite at mealtime. Some are noticeably Christian, but most are more general appeals to God. The collection includes scriptural references, a Mennonite children's prayer, international graces, a Quaker grace, and others, including several written by Lois Rock. The poems lead the reader through a variety of experiences, from private morning meals, to meals shared with family and friends, to special holidays. Particular attention is given to words from "around the world" and from "long ago," helping children see the universal experience of giving thanks. Quiet illustrations by Alison Jay bring additional warmth to the gentle words of the prayers. The pictures feature basics of human life like bread, angels, families, embraces, and people working together. Full two-page spreads on the first and final pages surround the collection of smaller illustrations, as do the topics of the poems on those pages: "In the morning," and "After eating." A small, quiet book with a strong message of gratitude and service.
