Dr. Carolyn Shank is a mother, grandmother and lifetime educator. She taught swimming to people of all ages and paid close attention to those who were fearful of the water. She raised her two daughters based on a water play and noticed her children never developed a fear. With this in mind, her doctoral dissertation focused on water orientation, primarily fear of the water and health and safety issues. Dr. Shank turned this dissertation into a manuscript for publication in 1982. A Child's Way to Water Play led to an invitation to to consult with and run workshops for water safety organizations on infant and preschool aquatics in Australia and New Zealand. She was also invited to serve on the American Red Cross team that developed the infant/preschool aquatic certification program for swim instructors. Over time, the book went out of print, she retired from teaching at Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo and couples were still having babies with little information available on the topic of a common sense approach to water orientation. Dr. Shank decided to update the book and make it available for all new parents, care givers, early childhood educators, and swim instructors.
