A Christmas Carol
Charles Dickens originally wrote A Christmas Carol because of crippling debt and out of obligation to his publisher. Despite his success with prior works, Dickens returned to London in 1843 with very little money. A Christmas Carol supplemented his family's relatively small income. Over time, it has become a perennial favorite during the holidays, as much a part of that time of year as holly, mistletoe, and presents.

Ebenezer Scrooge's strange spectral encounters are equal parts mysterious and nostalgic as he traverses his Christmas past, present, and future. Scrooge's characterization is complex, showing the miserly grouch first but also a once gleeful boy. Written by one of the greatest novelists, A Christmas Carol is an unforgettable staple of the holidays.

About the Author

About The Author
Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is probably the greatest novelist England has ever produced, the author of such famous books as A Christmas Carol, Hard Times, Great Expectations, David Copperfield, and Oliver Twist. His innate comic genius and shrewd depictions of Victorian life — along with his indelible characters — have made his books beloved by readers the world over. Dickens was born in Landport, Portsea, England and died in Kent after suffering a stroke. The second of eight children of a family continually plagued by debt, the young Dickens came to know hunger, privation, and the horrors of the infamous debtors' prison and the evils of child labor. These unfortunate early life experiences helped shape many of his greatest works.
