Editorial Reviews

Lisa Napoli
Kennedy brings the same enthusiasm for her subject to this book as she did to "An Easter Celebration: Traditions and Customs from around the World". Demonstrating how ancient pagan midwinter festivities were assimilated into Christian celebrations, she presents international customs as well as those particular to certain cultures. Christmas lights, evergreens, mistletoe and holly, gift giving, and feasting are common symbols and customs around the world. While children in Christian cultures await a special gift giver each Christmas season, he (or she) arrives in different form and on a different day, depending on the country. More recent historical events illustrate the origins of other traditions. Emphasizing the whole season of Christmas rather than one day, Kennedy notes special feast days such as St. Lucia's Day and Epiphany. While many Christmas books for children explain different customs and their origins, the picture-book format and concise text (with short "chapters" of one to nine pages) make Kennedy's book accessible while supplying a wealth of information. Bright color paintings and photographs and black-and-white drawings from varied sources appear beside the text, usually covering approximately one third of each page. What shines through here is the need for people to have celebrations of continuous life, faith, or peace in the midst of dreariness. Kennedy notes that during Iroquois midwinter ceremonials in North America, "a spirit of joy and goodwill filled people's hearts. Old battles were forgotten, and even enemies tried to get along," while today, "Christmas cease-fires and the release of political prisoners are arranged during the holiday period." A practical and engaging overview of "the most festive Christian holiday." Two activities are included.
