Emily Dymoke believes she lives in the shadows of her beautiful sister, Diana. Outspoken, independent Emily has a hard time fitting into the societal rules of the London ton. Michael Balcarris, close friend of Emily's brother Colin, is secretly in love with her. He has been for years. However, his profession prevents him from developing long term relationships. He must live the life of an insufferable bore and cad to cover his true identity and work. When his mother decides to summer with Emily's family in the country, Michael joins them. Much to Emily's dismay, his presence both annoys and attracts her.
