K-Gr 2 Beany Bear is not quite sure he likes the clock Aunt Maud sent for his birthday. First, his friend Scamp Squirrel tells him that they can't eat until the clock's hands point to 12, and then the alarm awakens him in the middle of the night. Unable to turn it off, Beany retreats to the woods to sleep, where he finds honey with which he fills his pillowcase before returning home. There he finds the bees swarming around the still buzzing clock, which is later fixed by Scamp so that the hands always point to lunchtime. Beany and Scamp are no substitutes for Winnie-the-Pooh and friends, but children will empathize with Beany's clock predicament and enjoy Scamp's ``repair'' of the pesky clock. Bassett's soft watercolors and simple lines establish the woodland setting and show two winsome characters. An extra for storyhours or bedtime reading. Diane S.
