Winner of the 2014 New England Readers' Choice Award, and the 2015 Aspen Gold.

Justice isn't always black or white. Sometimes it's cold and dark.

Former CIA assassin Alex Parker works for The Gateway Project, a clandestine government organization hell-bent on taking out serial killers and pedophiles before they enter the justice system. Alex doesn't enjoy killing, but he's damn good at it. He's good at dodging the law, too-until a beautiful rookie agent has him wondering what it might be like to get caught.

FBI Special Agent Mallory Rooney has spent years hunting the lowlife who abducted her identical twin sister eighteen years ago. Now, during an on-going serial killer investigation, Mallory begins to suspect there's a vigilante operating outside the law. She has no choice but to take him down, because murder isn't justice. Is it?

When Mallory starts asking questions, The Gateway Project management starts to sweat, and orders Alex to watch her. As soon as they meet, the two begin to fall in love. But the lies and betrayals that define Alex's life threaten to destroy them both-especially when the man who stole her sister all those years ago makes Mallory his next target, and Alex must reveal his true identity to save the woman he loves.

New York Times and USA Today international bestselling author, Toni Anderson, writes dark, gritty Romantic Suspense novels that have hit the Amazon and Nook Top 10, and iBooks Top 50. Her novels have won many awards.

A former Marine Biologist from Britain, she inexplicably ended up in the geographical center of North America, about as far from the ocean as it is possible to get. Toni has no explanation for her oft-times dark imagination, and only hopes the romance makes up for it. She's addicted to reading, dogs, tea, and chocolate.

The author wrote a book with an intricate and well thought plot. He makes his readers care about the characters. He comes across as an experienced writer who knows how to tell a good story. He even managed to keep the violence to a level that promotes the story rather than slowing it down. Unfortunately he did not succeed as well where sex is concerned. Page affter page of fitting body parts around and inside other body parts were skipped in frustration by this reader. The auther would have done well to insert sex only where it moves the story forward.

I rarely give a review but this author is an excellent writer and storyteller. I found it difficult to put this book down once I started reading it. I just discovered this series and I am already starting on book three. I highly recommend this author.

Fasr-paced action keeps you guessing till the end. A solid suspense story with believable characters that the author pulls together (against the literary and credibility odds) into a cohesive and satisfying ending. Definitely following the rest of the series!

Author is a good soryteller. This gripped my interest. Ending was a litle philosophical, then turned gray. I noticed minor edits... search for college (should be colleague), and blurry-eyed instead if bleary-eyed, and a couple of other minor distractions that I can't remember anymore. Worth my time reading this again, it was really good. Trying the others in the series.

I wasn't sure about this in the beginning, but I kept reading, and I was glad I did. This story had a lot of twists and turns and great character development. Great story!!

Believable characters with a plot that is a grabber, but not confusing to follow. Laid good clues in an inoffensive way throughout. Would definitely like to read others from this author

This was an excellent read. I couldn't put it down. The only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars were the occassional detailed sex excerpts that I felt weren't necessary in a top notch crime drama. Fortunately, they weren't too lengthy or too frequent. It was also a bit predictable, but most stories are. Otherwise, it was extremely good and you won't be disappointed.

I love a good thriller and A Cold Dark Place by Toni Anderson fits the bill. From the opening pages, man’s inhumanity to man rears its ugly head. Toni wastes no time in twisting and turning the plot, surprising me early, and I love it! As things become more dangerous and complicated, I become more engrossed in a story I was already very invested in. My favorite novels are suspense/thrillers and Toni keeps the twists and turns coming, and the suspense building at a rapid pace. Criminal minds on steroids! I LOVED A Cold Dark Place and found it almost impossible to put down, but my eyes were blurring and it was getting late…or should I say early. I can hardly wait to get my hands on the rest of the series!

Mallory Rooney's twin was kidnapped and never found when they were 9 years old. 18 years later, she's working for the FBI because she thinks their files will give her the resources she needs to finally find out what happened to her sister, Payton. Alex Parker was a CIA operative in Afghanistan who "got caught" and the CIA denied his existence. After wallowing in an Afghani jail for months, having starved, beaten and neglected, he willingly agreed to help a US government vigilante group whose goal is to find and destroy pedophiles and serial killers - and by "help," I mean kill the people responsible for the murders. Alex's and Mallory's world are rocked when they meet each other and feel an instant attraction. Both try to fight it, but because Mallory has deduced that there is a vigilante aspect to some recent killings, Alex has to get close to her to discover her secrets and be sure that she doesn't discover who he is. After a second chance encounter turns into a night of passion, Alex and Mallory are addicted to each other, but neither wants to commit to a relationship because both feel that they are "bad" at relationships. But, they can't stay away from each other and a relationship blossoms, despite their intentions. Alex become more involved as the kidnapper/killer targets Mallory and he finds his feelings for her growing. The book has some unexpected plot twists (OK, so I didn't see one or two coming) and I couldn't see how there would be a HEA, but the author worked a plausible one in.

A 270 page free book and first in series of a woman FBI agent tracking down an assassin and a serial killer while continuing a 12 year search for the person(s) that stole her twin sister. Graphic murder scenes, adult language, explicit sexual descriptions and encounters. There is a very good story within the roundalay of obsessive sexual attraction. The three boxed set of the continued series is available for .99 for a limited time.
