About the Author

Hi! I'm 28 years old and as a child I always thought I had to be perfect. I knew what I wanted to do with my life by the time I was a 7th grader and I did everything in my power to become a professional trumpet player. But when I turned 15, things started going south for me and things started getting weird. I was seeing giant spiders and a giant skull reflected in the mirror, and all kinds of other things. It was like having a nightmare, but I was awake and I knew I was awake. I had no idea what was going on. I had no idea what psychosis was, or even what mental illness was. I'd been having psychosis but I didn't know what it was and it just got worse. Since none of the adults or authority figures in my life had any clue what was going on either, when I started having manic episodes I suffered humiliation, rejection and isolation. Because people didn't understand me, and how could they because I didn't even understand myself. But then when I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and severe psychosis, and later schizophrenia and people did know what was going on with me, even less people wanted to be friends or even acknowledge my existence. My goal with writing is to show the world that mentally ill people are human, deserving of respect, dignity and kindness.
