Evelyn (Timmie) Birge Vitz is Professor of French at New York University, and Affiliated Professor of Religious Studies, Medieval and Renaissance Studies, and Comparative Literature. She has been thinking, talking, and writing about food-and cooking!-for many years. Mrs. Vitz lives in New York City with her husband, Paul C. Vitz. They have six children-and a growing number of grandchildren.

This book was originally published in 1985. I purchased it back then. Never have I enjoyed a book as much as this one - other than my prized Italian cookbook collection. I have given my sisters this book and they still have, and use, theirs. Favorite: cranberry steamed pudding. delicious! This has become our Christmas dinner dessert over the years. My only disappointment? that it's not available for my Nook!!
This cookbook contains many favorite recipes and traditions from all over the world that revolve around the Christian calendar. Beginning with Advent and Christmas, moving through Lent to Easter, it also includes customs and recipes for entertaining, birthdays, and special Saints' feastdays. The recipes are simple and use US measurements, and include main dishes, meatless meals, soups, and desserts. My two favorite recipes in the book: Minestrone Soup for Lent, and Steamed Plum Pudding for Christmas. Both are big hits with my family. If you ever wondered why certain foods or dishes were served at different times of the year, this cookbook explains it all. Each chapter is sprinkled with scripture readings, verses to poems or songs, drawings and the motherly wisdom of the author. Even though out of print now, I am ordering a used copy to replace the one I cannot find... in time to make my figgy pudding!
