A Coral Reef

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
No writer of science fiction has ever described a world as foreign and as fascinating as a coral reef. These state-sized tropical aquatic habitats are formed over thousands, sometimes millions, of years from the remains of animals just large enough to see. Today they are home to a dazzling array of sea creatures from deadly sharks and moray eels to spectacular Christmas tree worms or graceful seahorses. In an ideal world all children would be introduced to biology in a coral reef, where ideas like symbiosis, food chains, and adaptation are not simply clear, they are spectacular. If it is impossible to take the child to the reef, this book does a better than creditable job of taking the reef to the child. Splendid photographs and sprightly text are engaging and informative. The book is part of the "Small World" series. 2002, Crabtree Publishing Company,

Gr 3-4-These useful resources cover the ecological habitat of animals and plants, their interaction, and survival in their respective habitats throughout the year. The need for the well-being of the ecological system is stressed. Students are encouraged to explore tide pools or to visit an aquarium as an extension to learning more about coral reefs, and to observe birds that might be flying north to the tundra. These suggestions seem a stretch and nonessential. Clearly captioned color photographs and illustrations show the variety of life in these environments, and sidebars labeled "Fantastic Facts" give additional information. Other excellent titles include Michael George's Coral Reef (1992; o.p.) and Tundra (1994; o.p., both Creative Education) and titles in the "Amazing Journeys" series (Heinemann Library).-Sandra Welzenbach, Villarreal Elementary School, San Antonio, TX Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
