Captain Lacey stops to assist a young woman in the market at Covent Garden, and realizes to his astonishment that she is his daughter, Gabriella. Lacey then discovers that his estranged wife and her paramour, a French officer, have journeyed to London at the invitation of James Denis to dissolve her marriage to Captain Lacey.

Meanwhile, a Bow Street Runner and a man from the Thames River Police have asked Lacey to help them look into the disappearances of "game girls" from Covent Garden. The magistrates aren't interested in their fate, but perhaps Lacey can learn a thing or two. Lacey agrees and recruits old friends to help.

But when the goings-on in Covent Garden put his daughter in danger, Lacey's crusade turns personal. He will do anything, and call in any favor from anyone, in order to protect his own Gabriella.

Realistically set in the sometimes unseemly environs of 19th-century London, the suspense is at an all-time high in this swiftly paced installment.
Leanne Davis
Ms. Gardner has crafted an excellent mystery to add to her continuing series of Captain Lacey.
Deborah Hern
The author writes, as always, with a real sense of the time and place, seamlessly weaving period details into the engrossing narrative. . . . Fans of historical mysteries won’t want to miss this one.

    latest in a great series.

This is the latest in a series of Capt. Lacey mysteries that are excellent. Lacey is all that you could wish for in a gentleman investigator, and his friend Grenville is an added bonus. The only problem is that there aren't more of them!

Not as good as the previous ones................................

Not as good as the previous ones..............................................................
I've loved the whole series up to now but thought this one had some major flaws.   Why Captain Lacey keeps beating himself up because his flighty  wife ran off with another man  I can't imagine.  The wife seemed selfish and a little stupid not to mention whole lot self centered.   Now I know  Lacey is a nice guy and all that but blaming yourself because your wife ran off with another man---took your daughter-----didn' t let her  know of your existence and went on to have 4 more children is a little much.   And they never explained how the daughter was kidnapped---they caught the criminal of course. But never told you how he accomplished the feat.    The other girls were hookers.   You knew they went willingly.  But how did he abscond with Gabriel without anyone noticing.   And her capture seemed a bit sanitized for her situation.   Hope the next one is better.   Still had some interesting parts.   The mystery was lame in this one.  Disappointing.

    ENJOYABLE

These historical mysteries are ideal for someone who wants to get away - a perfect novel to read while traveling This is #6 and it advances what a reader knows about the uber-villan as well as the main character. I've read all books available in the series this summer.

Love this series. Have all that are available so far.

So readable and believable. Like the fact that the major character isn't rich, extremely handsome, etc. He is a believable person.

? Love the books by Ashley Gardner!

If you like Regency English mysteries, you will love this book! Captain Lacey uses all people and means available to him to uncover the whereabouts of his estranged wife, after she and their 17 year old daughter returned to London. If you like William Monk and Ian Rutledge, you will be thrilled with Captain Gabriel Lacey!
